The Birkdale Cakery, My Story.

To all of my lovey supporters, friends, family and customers. However our paths have crossed I would like to educate you about me, why I love cake and how I came to set up The Birkdale Cakery. I was born and raised in Southport in our family home by my two wonderful parents and my brother. I was born with home cooking, baking and art running through my veins. Both families on my Mum and Dads side are skilled bakers, cooks and artists. I was always brought up baking delicious cakes with my Mum and creating art (in all different forms) with my Dad. I went through school and college and decided to go to university so I could pursue a career in the veterinary industry. During my working life I always spent my spare time making and decorating cakes for home, friends and family. I have always enjoyed expression through art and at a young age I found a natural ability, flair and passion to exhibit that in cake decorating. My husband was always behind me encouraging me to take my passion further but my own self-doubt got in the way. Fast forward 5 years and two children. I began to get enquiries from friends of friends, asking if I could make them a cake…*insert panic here*…Although I was flattered, I was not confident that I could create a cake worth selling. Off the back of this I finally convinced myself that I might actually be better than I thought at this whole cake thing so I began to look in to courses. After a little bit of research I decided to chase my dream and whilst our children slept I went to night school. At night school I perfected my basic techniques and massively grew in confidence. I continued to practice and put some thought into where I wanted to see myself as a cake artist and where I wanted to stand in the cake industry. I found another course that was more advanced and tailored to the style and direction I wanted to go in and gained my diploma in wedding cake design and decoration. I just couldn’t get enough! Off I went…yet another course, more technique, more art, more design and more confidence! So there we have it (all be it in a very brief nutshell), The Birkdale Cakery was born! I set up the page as soon as I had a name and brand. I was shocked at how positively it was received by the general public. Without any formal marketing (other than free social media) orders started to roll in. I will never forget that feeling I had when I received my first order from a ‘stranger’. In less than one year I had a diary with at least a 3-4 orders every week and they were stacking up more and more each day. Although I am getting used to owning my own cake business, I won’t ever take it for granted. I am a firm believer, if you can dream it, you can do it! A lot of hard work, late nights, juggling and determination but I am doing it, I am living out my dream! Thank you, every one of you, for your support and orders it all means the world and I couldn’t do any of it without you. Life is better with cake…🎂
