Chaplaincy, University of St Andrews

Chaplaincy, University of St Andrews The University of St Andrews Chaplaincy provides guidance and support to all students and staff regardless of their faith or philosophy of life.

The Chaplain to the University is Revd Dr Donald MacEwan. The Chaplaincy is a University department which enhances the life and experience of students and staff in all sorts of ways. We offer worship in the beautiful medieval chapels on Sundays, weekdays, Christmas, graduation, andother times of year. The Chaplaincy team offer pastoral care for any student or member of staff, regardless of faith o

r philosophy of life. This could be a sympathetic, confidential listening ear, support in emotional issues, a safe place to explore questions of faith or sexuality, someone to talk to in a crisis, or support when all else fails. To arrange to meet Donald, the Chaplain, email him on [email protected]. To meet with one of the Assistant Chaplains, contact Samantha on [email protected], or Bill on [email protected] or email the secretaries on [email protected] or call 01334 462866 or drop by the Chaplaincy. We support people of different faiths, providing honorary chaplains, space in the Chaplaincy building (called Mansefield, across from the Union), and we sponsor the Interfaith Steering Group, which runs wonderfully stimulating events. We have a range of facilities available for both student groups and individuals, including small and large meeting rooms, kitchen, garden, and quiet meditation/prayer spaces. Should you or your group wish to book any of our facilities please contact the Chaplaincy secretaries who will be happy to assist you.

This group is open to anyone who is grieving—whether your loss is recent or something you continue to carry from the past. We offer dedicated events for both staff and students - student events will resume in September. It offers an opportunity to find common ground with others if you are feeling isolated and alone and is a safe place to discuss and share various aspects of grief.

Congratulations to Harry McCabe, Facilities Support Team Leader (that’s Senior Janitor in everyday English), who was on duty at a Sunday Chapel Service yesterday for the last time after 25 years! Harry looks forward to a well-earned retirement over the summer. He is pictured here with the visiting preacher Revd Canon Justin White, Sam and me. We will miss his obliging nature and good sense in looking after St Salvator’s Chapel for services, weddings, funerals and more. Enjoy your retirement, Harry!

We are looking for a dedicated and well organised Chief Usher to play a key role in supporting the life of the University Chapels. This voluntary position open to any student is central to ensuring our services run smoothly and that the chaplaincy team is fully supported.
The Chief Usher must be reliable and able to attend most—though not all—Sunday Worship services, as well as key special services throughout the year. They will coordinate the team of ushers who support preparations before services, including Sunday Worship, Evensong, Compline, and special services such as the University Carol Service and the Commemoration of St Leonard.
Key Responsibilities
• Liaising with the chaplaincy team
• Coordinating the rota of ushers to ensure every service has appropriate cover
• Providing guidance and support to the ushering team
Typical Duties Undertaken by the Usher Team
• Lighting candles before services
• Assisting with refreshments following Sunday Worship
• Placing reserved seating signs where required
• Handing out orders of service as the congregation arrives
• Helping maintain a welcoming environment in the chapel for the congregation
Feel free to talk to any Chaplain informally about the role. Applications welcome by email to [email protected]

Delighted to say that in the Oldest Debating Society last night our Assistant Chaplain Reverend Samantha Ferguson and her debating partner Arielle Friedlander won - they successfully opposed the motion ‘This House Believes that feminism is incompatible with Christianity’! An excellent end to this academic year of debating!
