Our students were recently joined by Phil Rees, CEO of SHIPMAX Ltd, for an ‘Industry Guest Lecture’ that focused on AI, e-commerce, innovation and what really matters in the world of industry. 💡🚀🌟

Phil’s talk was open and authentic, confidence‑building, less about perfection, more about honesty, refreshingly aligned with how modern digital work really gets done and very valuable to our students. 👏

One of our final year students ‘Kieran Brown’ recently visited the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) Conference 2026 in Boston Massachusetts.

The Conference brought together industry leaders, researchers, and innovators to engage with cutting‑edge developments emerging from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The conference also served as a forum for collaboration between academia and industry, supporting the translation of the latest research into practical, real‑world applications.

"Through a series of talks and lectures we explored emerging trends in artificial intelligence and gained exposure to practical tools and recommendations shaping the future of the field." - Kieran Brown

AI readiness is about scale and digital maturity. Our own UWTSD Associate Professor Tim Bashford, Research Lead at the Wales Institute of Digital Information (WIDI) at UWTSD, explores why some organisations are prepared for AI… and why many aren’t.

In his latest feature with Business News Wales, Tim breaks down:
* How public services in Wales are more AI ready than people think
* The critical role universities play in upskilling and responsible AI adoption

Many thanks to Adam Curtis (CEO of Hoowla) & Edd Turtle (Senior Software Developer at Hoowla) for recently visiting UWTSD's School of Applied Computing to share industry insights, emerging trends and top enterprising tips. The talk was thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students alike.

The session gave students valuable insight into how technology, user‑centred design, and real‑world business needs come together in a regulated, fast‑evolving sector.

The talk highlighted the practical challenges faced by law firms and how platforms like Hoowla address them through automation, workflow design, and secure case management. It was particularly valuable for students to hear how technical skills translate directly into solving real client problems, and how collaboration between developers, designers, and domain experts underpins effective digital solutions.

A huge thank you to our industry partners from Fujitsu, David Jones (Principal Consultant) and Geraint Williams (Director of Mission Control), for returning to the University to deliver an inspiring industry guest lecture on Innovation & Project Management.

Their session gave students a rare insider view into how major organisations turn ideas into real value. They explored what true innovation looks like in practice. The second half of the lecture brought project management to life through real industry case studies.

Both speakers emphasised that innovation and delivery must go hand-in-hand a left a powerful message: technology, solutions, and big ideas are essential, but it’s people, collaboration, and social connection that ultimately turn ideas into positive, real-world impact.

We are incredibly grateful to David and Geraint for sharing their valuable experience once again, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration. To rad the blog post please click here: https://tinyurl.com/ywhd67w3
