If you haven't managed to visit yet, there is less than one week left to see 'Heartwood' from . This photographic study into the landscape of Old Wi******er Hill takes us on a winding path through the darkness and the tangled underbrush to reveal nocturnal wildlife movements and discarded objects long overgrown.

Thanks to Dave for sharing such thoughtful work with us, and honouring a piece of the local landscape that is sometimes overlooked.

Show ends 6th August 2024.
Gallery open Mon-Fri 8.30am-6pm, Sat 9am-4pm

The Virtual Burglary Project: how we’ve used VR to study the expertise of burglars (and other offenders).
The Centre for Forensic and Investigative Psychology is delighted to offer a FREE public lecture (all welcome) on Thursday 30 May from 5pm in the Stripe Lecture Room, on the King Alfred campus, Sparkford Road, SO22 4NR.

In recent years, virtual reality has been used to deepen our understanding of expertise in offending behaviour while the crime is carried out in a virtual environment. Claire will begin by explaining the theory of expertise and how it can help us understand offending behaviours. She will then give an overview of what we have discovered about how burglars 1) assess neighbourhoods for vulnerable properties, 2) choose a particular property and 3) break in and carry out the offence once inside. Claire will discuss how we could use this information for both deterring the burglar at the scene of the crime and rehabilitate offenders who want to desist from crime. She will go on to outline research focussed on how householders assess their risk for burglary and ways to improve this. The talk will conclude with how our research methods are now being used to understand other types of offending, using predatory child sexual offending as an example.

Claire Nee is Professor Emeritus of Criminological Psychology at the University of Portsmouth. She joined the department in 1996 from the Home Office Research and Statistics Directorate. She founded the International Centre for Research in Forensic Psychology in 1997 and was Director until 2021. With her team at Portsmouth, Vrije University in the Netherlands and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime and Law in Germany, she was the first to use virtual reality to study criminal decision-making and behaviour as it happens. She also developed the theory of Dysfunctional Expertise in offending behaviour. She is visiting professor at the Max Planck Institute and at the Philippe Pinel Institute in Montreal, Canada.

All are welcome to attend - there is no need to book.

Next Wednesday afternoon crack out your art skills and contribute to the exhibition 'Being Human: Seeing Ourselves', currently installed in our beautiful West Downs Gallery. Join artist Andrew Carnie for a drop-in workshop and think about how we see our bodies, and their interaction with the cycles of nature. Andrew will incorporate work produced in these sessions into the current exhibition or future iterations. There will be lots of materials to work with, including felting, drawing and watercolour. All are welcome!

3-6pm in Cafe Life (adjacent to the gallery on the ground floor of the West Downs Centre). Parking on campus is not available without a permit before 4pm, but buses from the city centre and the P&R stop outside West Downs very regularly.
