Iolo here. I retired from the university on Friday. Had a great night out to say goodbye. Thank you to all my colleagues for their support over the years. Thank you also to the students I’ve had over the years, many of whom I am still in contact with. I’m still professor emeritus, so will be around from time to time. May also see some of you when I’m out on inspection. But until then, good luck in all you do.

It was a pleasure to welcome the 2026 Welsh Centre for Crime and Social Justice (WCCSJ) Conference at Wrexham University this week.

A huge thank you to the organisers and presenters for delivering such an engaging, thought-provoking, and well-curated conference bringing together academics, policymakers, and practitioners from across the criminal justice sector.

The discussions around reimagining probation, community safety, and approaches to substance use highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and evidence-informed practice in shaping a more effective and socially just criminal justice system.

Events such as this provide a valuable opportunity to share research, challenge ideas, build partnerships, and reflect on the future direction of justice policy and practice in Wales and beyond.

Thank you again to everyone involved in organising and contributing to such a meaningful and inspiring event.

Today, our Programme Leader in Criminology Wrexham University , Dr Jo Prescott, delivered a fascinating widening access lecture to Groundwork North Wales as part of our interdisciplinary outreach offer across Criminology, Law, Policing and Criminal Psychology.

During this taster session, delegates explored the relationship between crime and popular culture through the life and crimes of Ed Gein. This thought-provoking case study enabled participants to critically analyse and evaluate how crime is represented, understood and often sensationalised within society and the media.

The session sparked great discussion and was well received by all involved, highlighting the value of bringing academic insight into wider community and professional settings.

As a team, we are passionate about widening access and creating engaging, accessible learning opportunities.

If you are an organisation, education provider, or part of a training or employment programme and would benefit from taster sessions on crime, law, justice, or the psychology behind offending behaviour, we would love to hear from you.

Post shares welcomed

Law student Niamh Owen is one of just two finalists from Wales to reach the BPP Advocate of the Year competition, taking place at the iconic Old Bailey in London this weekend.

Speaking about the opportunity, Niamh said: “The overwhelming feeling of representing Wrexham is quite incredible. Going to the Old Bailey is extraordinary.”

Niamh credits her lecturers and the support network at Wrexham University for helping her build the confidence and skills to reach the final of a national advocacy competition:

“We’re really lucky to be part of a university that genuinely invests in its students.

The university recognises our different strengths and supports us in developing them through its active learning framework.”

Good luck, Niamh 🤩
