Jo Rose & Claudia Milena Adler will take on the York 2025 Tough Mudder! Find out why below!

In 2024 Jo Rose and Claudia Milena Adler had the privilege to work with some of Pakistan's flood-affected communities. The 2022 floods swept away everything and caused mass destruction to homes and lives. Two years on relief agency Islamic Relief Pakistan rebuilt the houses, which consisted of a single room. It is in one of those rooms we gathered with women from the community. It was stifling with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius, yet the women sat patiently with us and shared their stories. It is there we heard Aishia’s* story:

“Before the floods, I had a sewing machine. I would sew our traditional blankets and sell them to get money for food for my family. I would teach my daughter to sew. The floods swept away our home and my sewing machine. Now I spend every day doing nothing. The land is too dry, we cannot grow anything. The floods took away my sewing machine, they took away my life.”

This story was the same for many of the women in this community. A sewing machine costs around £100 in Pakistan. We aim to raise funds for at least 5 sewing machines. As women and mothers we went away wanting to make a personal contribution and make a small difference to their everyday lives. The ability to congregate, sew and have the opportunity to receive some income and contribute to their household living expenses would be impactful.

Launching our free online inter-institutional learning toolkit on Reconciliation, Memory and Trauma! This stand-alone module focuses on climate change, health and wellbeing, peace and reconciliation, and memory and trauma due to the conflict in Colombia, which is covered through 10 units. The module was co-created by the University of York, the Universidad De San Buenaventura of Cartagena and the NGO Corporacion Desarrollo y Paz del Canal del Dique y Zona Costera. Each organization brings a unique set of expertise and tools that have contributed to a truly interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary module. Join us to learn more about the module and how it was co-created.

Who is this for? Anyone wanting to learn more about these concepts and gain knowledge from the experience of frontline responders. Although focused on Colombia, this module can be used for others focused on similar contexts. The core teaching team wanted to provide a free learning toolkit to anyone and everywhere to foster learning as we work collectively towards peaceful societies. This has been possible thanks to funding from the The Association of Commonwealth Universities & work with Universidad de San Buenaventura - Cartagena, Corporación Desarrollo y Paz Canal del Dique y Zona Costera & University of York
