Some of our level 6 BSc Equine Science with Management students got the amazing opportunity to go behind the scenes at Pontefract Racecourse on Tuesday to see how everything works! What an experience they got, seeing the different sections of the racecourse, testing how the gates work, following behind the races in the cars, seeing the screens where the races are recorded and evaluated for any anomalies and even judging and choosing the winner for the best turned out.

The teams that run Pontefract Races were incredible at giving the students an insight and answering all the different questions they had - no question was too much.

All the horses were very smart so this was a very hard pick, but one of the winners they chose (Hectic) even had his name in his quarter marks!

Wanting to experience all of the equine industry? Apply now for our FdSc and BSc Equine Science with Management degree to be included in these opportunities:

🔍 Research Round-Up: Conservation & Ecology Student Shares Findings at the Northern Bat Conference 🦇

Hannah Wilson, a current Conservation & Ecology (Top-Up) student, recently represented the Cleveland Bat Group at the Northern Bat Conference at the University of Salford in Manchester.

Hannah delivered a talk based on her dissertation, exploring the stress factors experienced by bat carers across the UK. Her research revealed that many carers experience semi‑frequent stress, often linked to the emotional, time‑intensive, and unpredictable nature of caring for injured or vulnerable bats.

During her presentation, she shared carers’ real experiences and highlighted practical strategies to help reduce stress within the community. The topic resonated strongly with attendees, and Hannah received excellent feedback on both the relevance of her research and the clarity of her delivery.

The positive response has encouraged Hannah to propose further research within the Cleveland Bat Group, aiming to support long‑term wellbeing improvements for those working in wildlife rehabilitation.

Hannah described the experience as incredibly rewarding and was proud to showcase her work to such an engaged audience. 🌿👏

✨ Easter Show Success! 🐣🐰
Yesterday our Level 5 BSc and FdSc Equine Science and Management students hosted their very own Easter Show as part of their Equine Event Management module — a project they’ve been planning and preparing for since January and what an incredible job they did!

There were smiles all round with a fantastic mix of in-hand, fancy dress, and ridden classes, with brilliant performances from all participants.

The fancy dress class did not disappoint… we had:
🥚 an Easter egg
🐰 an Easter bunny
🥕 a carrot
🐥 and even a chick!

Our superstar horses and ponies at Askham Bryan Equine took everything in their stride, showcasing just how adaptable and reliable they are in all sorts of fun and creative situations.

Want the chance to run your own show as part of your degree?

Module Mention: Level 5 MACWC – Collections Management

This week, students from across UCAB headed off to Peak Wildlife Park for a fantastic day trip. Our Level 5 Management of Animal Collections with Conservation students used the visit as a real‑world case study for one of their Collections Management assignment. It was a brilliant opportunity to observe best practice in action and gain first‑hand insight into modern zoo operations, welfare standards, and enclosure design.

Whilst there, we were thrilled to be joined by UCAB alumnus Jamie, who is now part of the team at Peak Wildlife Park. Jamie kindly shared his journey to becoming a zookeeper — from his education and training to the hands‑on experiences that helped shape his career in animal management.

A huge thank you to Jamie and the entire Peak Wildlife Park team for inspiring our future professionals!

🐄 Tech & Taste Time at Curlew Fields Dairies

Our students explorers Precision Livestock Technology in action with a visit to Curlew Fields Dairy - watching the robotic milker at work and hearing real industry perspectives.

They also discovered the value of farm diversification, touring the on-site farm shop and sampling some very popular farm-fresh milkshakes! 🥤🥛

A brilliant hands-on experience showing how innovation and diversification shape the future of farming.

💫 Lauren Emerson – Course Manager & Lecturer in Equine & Animal Science at UCAB 🐴🔬

Lauren is one of our Equine Studies Lecturers and a Course Manager, teaching across equine, animal, and academic subjects. With a strong passion for equine welfare, she presented her BSc dissertation at the 2016 International Society of Equitation Science Conference and later completed an MRes in Animal Health and Welfare, focusing on equine vibrissae.

Her research contributed to the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI’s) 2021 rule change, which now disqualifies horses with trimmed vibrissae without veterinary oversight — a significant step forward for equine welfare.

At UCAB, Lauren loves exploring anatomy through dissections, supporting student development, and collaborating across the science team. She has lived and worked with horses in Germany and the USA, and her love of travel and new cultures continues to inspire her teaching. 🌍
