Congratulations to our Level 3 Travel & Tourism learner Kira Wong, who has secured a place at York St John University to study BA (Hons) Events and Experience Management.

On her achievement, Kira said: "I became interested in the opportunity to study at university because I intend to continue developing my career in tourism and customer service. By studying the course material, I was able to not only gain theoretical knowledge, but also to develop several essential practical skills, including communication, teamwork, presentation skills and the ability to identify customers’ needs.

"The practical lessons, which focused on real issues within the tourism industry, were especially useful. These sessions helped prepare me for everything that awaits me after completing my university studies."

Well done Kira and we look forward to seeing you flourish at St John's!

A big well done to our former Public Services student Alex Bramwell, who raised £290 by competing in a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Charity Fight.

Alex donated the money to Mind, Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Royal British Legion.

Ultra MMA trained him for the bout and he was then pitched against another novice fighter, who he went on to beat!

York's Alex Bramwell decided that he wouldn’t let anything stand in the way of experiencing his own bout in MMA.

Congratulations to our former student Gihan Arnolda who will break new ground today by becoming the first black horse trainer to send out a runner from stables in Newmarket.

Gihan, 45, has a horse competing at Great Yarmouth Racecourse today, having set up as a trainer at Cadland Cottage Stables.

A former Flat jockey, Gihan left the sport for five years after a bad fall at the same racecourse, which left him with a broken pelvis.

During that time, he retrained as a chef after enrolling at York College in 2009 on our three-year Professional Cookery diploma.

He went on to become a Chef de Partie at the four-star Royal York Hotel (now The Milner York) and also worked for legendary restaurateur Gordon Ramsay.

Born in Britain to Sri Lankan parents, Gihan was homeless from the age of 12 to 14 on the streets of London, went into the foster care system and did not sit on a horse until he was 18.

After excelling in the hospitality industry, though, he returned to the racehorse industry, where he is now making history.
