This July, we are proud to present a new on-campus symposium in partnership with York Minster.

This event marks the 800th anniversary of the canonisation of St William of York, whose shrine at York Minster became one of the great medieval centres of pilgrimage and prayer for healing.

The theme is the reconsideration of our understanding of healing in the 21st century. While the language of healing has often been associated with miraculous restoration or cure, the symposium will explore a broader theological vision - one that includes reconciliation, belonging, dignity, and the restoration of communities as well as bodies.

Featuring an impressive line-up of international speakers, this event aims to bring the wisdom of the Christian tradition into dialogue with the complex realities of modern life.

Limited tickets remain for Professor Steve Rawle's anticipated inaugural lecture on 6 May.

Throughout this lecture, Steve will reflect on a contradictory career. While his research often looks at culturally denigrated (and sometimes downright bad) cinema, he tries to teach students how to make the best films possible. The lecture will be a passionate defence of film and media studies, which can be seen as a ‘Mickey Mouse subject’. Steve will reflect on working at the wrong end of quality in the ‘wrong’ end of academia.

Steve is a graduate of York St John, having received a BA in Drama, Film and Television in 1997. A lot of his recent writing is about Godzilla and giant monster movies. Recently, he been working with colleagues around the world to mark and reflect upon the 70th birthday of Japan’s most famous cultural export. As such, his nickname at YSJ is 'Dr Monster'!

Don't miss this free event. Final tickets can be found via the link in bio.

We are thrilled to announce the next event in the YSJ Events Curates series, which launched earlier this year and brings diverse, fresh events to campus, all devised and delivered by the YSJ Events team.

It is our privilege to be welcoming Gabriella Di Laccio MBE, a multi-award-winning soprano, TED speaker, and PhD researcher. She is the founder of the Donne Foundation, a UK-based organisation advancing gender equality in the music industry through research, performance, and advocacy.

Listed as one of the BBC 100 Women in 2018, Gabriella has established an international profile as both an artist and an advocate. Her work focuses on the underrepresentation of women composers.

In this lecture-recital event on 19 May, Gabriella will explore the following question through research and live performance - why are so few works by women composers performed on the world’s stages?

To be followed by a wine reception and canapes. All are welcome, and the event is FREE. This is sure to be a sell-out, so reserve your place via the link in bio now!
