Why should an intra-African transaction default to a third currency?

In our latest issue of The ANU Brief, Lawrence Bassey Ekpo (Coordinator, MBA Finance & BBA Banking and Finance) unpacks the hidden dollar dependence baked into everyday African life β€” from Ghana Card fees to work permits to university tuition β€” and asks what it means for how we train future bankers.

The piece traces three layers of "dollarisation" (pricing, payment, and settlement), examines what PAPSS really solves (and doesn't), and lays out a practical roadmap for decolonising finance curricula β€” including how ANU has already moved international tuition from USD to Ghanaian cedis.

A must-read for anyone thinking about African monetary sovereignty, fintech, and the future of business education.

Celebrating Alumni Excellence: Joy Tari-Bagshaw

All Nations University is incredibly proud to celebrate our alumna, Joy Tari-Bagshaw, for her remarkable achievement as Co-Founder and Business Lead of Omaya Care, an AI-powered maternal health startup building proactive postpartum care for African mothers.

Joy and her team were recently named the Overall Winner of the Ghana AI Innovation Challenge at the 2026 Ghana AI Summit & Awards, earning GHS 25,000 to accelerate the development of their solution.

Omaya Care is addressing a critical gap in maternal healthcare: the period after a mother leaves the hospital. Through proactive voice calls and WhatsApp, Omaya enables healthcare teams to continue checking in with mothers, identify potential risks earlier, and escalate cases requiring further clinical attention.

As Business Lead, Joy has played a key role in shaping the venture's partnerships, business strategy, customer discovery, and engagement with healthcare stakeholders. Her journey reflects the power of combining technology, entrepreneurship, and a deep commitment to solving real-world challenges.

This achievement is a testament to Joy's growth as a builder and leader, and to the impact that young African innovators can create when technology is grounded in the realities of the communities they serve.

ANU joins the wider community in congratulating Joy and the entire Omaya Care team on this significant milestone. It looks forward to witnessing Omaya Care's continued growth and impact on maternal healthcare across Ghana and Africa.

Big congratulations to Mr Tamil Selvan Stalin, Assistant Head of Department at All Nations University, on being honoured by Ethiopian Airlines with a Certificate of Appreciation! βœˆοΈπŸ…

On 19th May 2026, aboard a flight from Addis Ababa to Accra, Mr Stalin stepped up to provide emergency medical assistance to a fellow passenger β€” a moment of quick thinking, composure, and genuine care for another human being.

Three months later, that act of service has been formally recognised by Ethiopian Airlines. We are incredibly proud to see the values of leadership and compassion we champion at ANU reflected so powerfully in our own community. πŸ‘

"Leadership means being ready to serve, wherever you are." β€” Mr Tamil Selvan Stalin
