ICA 2026 Reception Successfully Hosted by COM

On June 5, 2026, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a reception at the 76th Annual International Communication Association (ICA) Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. The event brought together over 400 scholars and researchers in the communication field to explore potential collaborations and discuss ongoing initiatives.

This year, COM showcased an impressive 49 research papers at the conference—the highest number in the department’s history—with 33 papers led by PhD students. The presentations spanned across 17 different divisions. Notably, one of COM's PhD students, Cao Xucheng received the Top Student Paper Award together with researcher Silvia Chen Zhang, representing CUHK in the Paper To Trust or to Verify? 🤩Beijing Normal University Cultural & Academic Trip 2026

✈️From 25 to 31 May 2026, Professor Edmund Lee, Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), led a group of five students from the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes on a short-term academic trip to Beijing. This study tour, organized by Beijing Normal University (BNU), aimed to deepen participants' understanding of academic and media developments in China’s capital city through visits to renowned media institutions and technology leaders.

📰As part of BNU’s annual exchange programme, COM students, along with representatives from the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University, engaged in a week-long immersive experience. The itinerary included a visit to the headquarters of People’s Daily, where participants had the opportunity to explore areas such as the editing room, new media studio, and museum. This provided valuable insights into the operational practices of a leading media organization. Additionally, the group toured Tencent’s corporate headquarters, one of China’s top-tier technological companies. During this visit, Tencent staff showcased cutting-edge AI tools and discussed content creation, platform management, and web development strategies.

📽️Beyond the company tours, COM students attended seminars and workshops hosted by BNU that focused on videography. These sessions emphasized practical application, culminating in the production of a video project. The students collaborated to create an engaging video that highlighted Beijing’s Central Axis, featuring its historical landmarks, cultural heritage sites, and architectural significance.

👏🏻This invaluable experience offered participants a unique blend of academic enrichment, cultural exchange, and hands-on learning, fostering their growth as future media professionals while providing a deeper appreciation of Beijing's dynamic role in the fields of media and technology.

📝Delegation Visit by Southwest University

On 21 May 2026, a representative from Southwest University visited the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong.

🏫The delegation comprised members from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges (OICE) and the School of Journalism and Communication. It included Mr. Yuanhong Dai, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office; Ms. Yi Zhang, Officer of OICE; Professor Wei Long, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication; and Professor Hua Zhang, Department Head. These faculty members participated in a productive meeting with COM to discuss topics related to potential short-term exchange programs, research collaboration, and technological partnerships, fostering mutual understanding between the two institutions.

👀Following the meeting, the COM faculty escorted the delegation on a tour of the department’s professional teaching facilities, offering insights into the actual learning environment for their students. 📰Drawing upon his extensive professional experience in the news industry, Professor Chen discussed the transformative impact of AI on journalism. He highlighted how advancements in AI technologies, such as the implementation of AI-powered news anchors, have revolutionized the field. ✈️MA Korea Study Tour 2026

🏫From May 14 to 18, 2026, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong organized the South Korea Study Tour for master’s students. A total of 31 participants from the MACNM and MAIMC programs took part in this five-day trip, gaining an immersive experience of South Korea’s renowned popular culture and its advanced academic environment in Northeast Asia.

📺During the tour, students visited the Department of Media and Communication at Yonsei University, which is ranked among the top 50 institutions in the latest QS University Rankings. They engaged with esteemed scholars and participated in a guided campus tour. Furthermore, the COM arranged a remarkable visit to the Korean Broadcasting Station (KBS), South Korea’s national broadcaster. This provided participants with a first-hand opportunity to observe newsroom operations and broadcasting studio workflows, thereby enriching their understanding of the daily practices within the Korean media industry.

🔎Beyond the focus on media, the study tour included visits to significant cultural landmarks such as Gwanghwamun Square, Changdeokgung Palace, and The National Museum of Korea. These excursions offered students insights into one of Northeast Asia’s most successful nations, helping them expand their perspectives and aspirations within the fields of media and communication.

COM Research Seminar: Artificial Intelligence and Crisis Communication

On 26 May 2026, Prof. Yang Alice Cheng from North Carolina State University delivered a seminar titled “Artificial Intelligence and Crisis Communication.”

In the seminar, Prof. Cheng explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping crisis communication mental health support and strategic public relations communication. Using the context of mass shootings in the United States, the presentation examined the emerging role of chatbots in post crisis response psychological support and community recovery. The talk also discussed AI triggered crises ethical challenges and the future of public relations in an increasingly AI driven world.

Faculty members and doctoral students from the Department of Media and Communication attended the session and engaged in a lively and intellectually stimulating discussion. In responding to questions from the audience, Prof. Cheng shared valuable insights on the role of artificial intelligence in crisis communication and public relations.

Dr. Cheng is a full professor in the Department of Communication and an adjunct professor in the Poole College of Management at NCSU, as well as an associate editor for the Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management. She has demonstrated a long-term commitment to research involving global public relations management, social media, and artificial intelligence, and crisis communication. Dr. Cheng is an internationally recognized scholar in communication and artificial intelligence. She has been listed among Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists and has consistently ranked among the top 1% worldwide in the field of Communication and Media Studies.

🏫On May 16, 2026, City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted the CityUHK JUPAS Consultation Day, offering prospective students a valuable opportunity to explore their academic options. During the event, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) presented its unique undergraduate programs through an engaging information booth. This initiative aimed to help senior secondary students understand how COM's offerings align with their academic aspirations and assist them in making informed JUPAS choices.

📝The session featured two distinguished faculty members, Assistant Professor Seungsu Lee, Programme Leader for the Major in Media and Communication (BAMDCM), and Vincent Wang, Programme Leader for the Major in Digital Television and Broadcasting (BATVB). They provided a detailed overview of the revamped program structures, highlighting how these courses aim to prepare students for dynamic careers in media and communication. 💬COM Research Seminar: Reclaiming Storytelling as Codesign, Participatory Research Methods in Communication Studies

🏫On 13 May 2026, Prof Jenny Zhengye Hou from Queensland University of Technology Australia delivered a seminar titled “Reclaiming Storytelling as Codesign, Participatory Research Methods in Communication Studies”.

📚In the seminar, Prof Hou explored how storytelling can move beyond its traditional role as a communication strategy and persuasive device to become a rigorous methodology for integrating diverse and marginalized voices into knowledge co production. She presented storytelling as a systematic and reflexive approach grounded in constructivist epistemology participatory praxis and intersectional analyses of power. Drawing on a critical review of multidisciplinary scholarship. Prof Hou articulated a four-stage methodological framework consisting of design conduct sensemaking and curation each embedded with ethical consideration and relational accountability. Through an empirical case she demonstrated both the transformative potential and the structural tensions of using storytelling as method. Prof. Hou advocated repositioning storytelling as an epistemic intervention that shifts research from extractive practices toward co creative and emancipatory knowledge co production ultimately advancing epistemic justice.

In responding to questions from the audience Dr. Hou shared valuable insights on the practical application and ethical considerations of storytelling as a research methodology.

Anchored in an interdisciplinary and socially engaged approach Dr. Hou advances communication scholarship and practice oriented toward public interest and social impact across diverse contexts ranging from health promotion disaster risk reduction food sustainability to accessible transport.
