Abstract: Building a career in academia is not glamorous—it is grit, rejection, and persistence disguised as progress. From HKU to Edinburgh and back to Hong Kong, I have learned to turn uncertainty into opportunity, chase grants that matter, and fight for work that makes a difference. This talk is not about perfection; it is about survival, growth, and finding purpose within the stress of academia. I will share what it really takes to carve out a career, from failed proposals to results that finally stick.
