永遠懷念胡鴻烈博士
我們尊敬的校監胡鴻烈博士於2025年7月27日在家人陪伴下安詳辭世，享壽105歲，香港樹仁大學仝人深切悼念。
胡博士1920年出生於浙江紹興，1942年於中央政治大學外交系畢業，1944年考取了外交官第一名，其後負笈海外。1946年，胡鴻烈任蘇聯烏茲別克共和國首都塔什干總領事館副領事。1952年，他獲法國巴黎大學頒授法學博士，兩年後考獲英國大律師資格並回港執業。他精通中、英、法、俄四國語言，鑽研國際法律問題之餘，亦參與多項改善民生的工作。他曾任市政局議員及香港立法局議員，關注香港青少年犯罪問題、協力落實香港推行九年免費教育、努力推動中文為官方語言及為徙置區居民爭取安居之所。
1971年，胡博士與妻子已故校長鍾期榮博士眼見香港大專教育嚴重短缺，以積蓄創辦樹仁書院，由鍾博士出任校長，胡博士出任校監。1976年，樹仁獲政府承認為註冊專上學院，改名樹仁學院。1978年，樹仁寧拒港英政府資助，也堅持教育理念，保留四年學制。多年來，二人披荊斬棘，自資覓地建校，拓展學院規模，提升教學水平，樹仁終於2006年獲香港特區政府宣佈為香港第一間私立大學。
胡博士出殯儀式和追思活動的舉行日期，一俟家人安排妥當後，將會另行公佈。

In Loving Memory of Dr Henry Hu Hung-lick
Dr Henry Hu Hung-lick, the President of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, passed away peacefully on 27 July 2025 with his family by his side. Dr Hu will be sadly missed by all staff, students and alumni of the University.
Born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province in 1920, Dr Hu graduated from the National University of Political Science in 1942 where he studied diplomacy. He ranked first in a national diplomat examination in 1944 before going overseas. Dr Hu served as Vice-Consul of the Consulate General of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic in Tashkent in 1946. He received a doctoral degree in Law from the University of Paris in 1952, and qualified as a barrister in the UK in 1954. Dr Hu began his legal practice upon his return to Hong Kong, specialising in international law and pledging to improve livelihoods in the city. Proficient in Chinese, English, French and Russian, he was a member of the Urban Council and a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council. He attached great importance to improving the lives of young people in Hong Kong. Among his many contributions, he pushed for nine-year free education in Hong Kong, advocated for the acceptance of Chinese as an official legal language and strived for housing for residents in resettlement areas.
Seeing the severe shortage of tertiary education in Hong Kong, Dr Hu and his late wife Principal Dr Chung Chi-yung established Shue Yan College with their personal savings in 1971. The college was recognised by the government and registered as a post-secondary college in 1976. With Dr Chung as Principal and Dr Hu as President, the college stayed true to its founding philosophies, choosing to retain the four-year college system rather than receiving government funding in 1978. They faced and overcame numerous difficulties over the years in their efforts to expand the college and improve its academic standards. In 2006, the college was approved by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government as the first private university in Hong Kong.
The date of Dr Hu’s funeral and memorial activities will be announced separately once the arrangements have been finalised by his family.
