[📕Staff Publication] "Self and Other in Confucian Philosophy" by Prof. Kevin Turner

📗Abstract
It is commonly accepted that the “self” in Confucian thought is a relational one. What this means, however, is not always clear. In addition, the relationality of the “self” entails certain philosophical problems—such as how one delineates self from other, and how others contribute to the constitution of the self. This article’s investigation of the relational self in Confucian thought focuses on the concept of ren 仁, arguing that it represents a bidimensional social ontology that connects horizontal and vertical dimensions between self and particular and general others. It focuses on the transmitted version of the character for ren, composed of “person and two,” to discuss the horizontal dimension, and on the Guodian excavated version, composed of “body above mind below,” to discuss the vertical dimension. Furthermore, it introduces George H. Mead’s theory of the “generalized other” to elaborate on the vertical dimensionality of the self-other relationship. This will show that self and other are mutually produced and incorporated into a progressive sociocultural complex of selfhood.

On May 21, 2026, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Peking University hosted a fascinating lecture titled: “近代中国的哥利亚与大卫:基督教注音字母委员会与民初识字教育” [Goliath and David in Modern China: The Phonetic Promotion Committee (PPC) and Literacy Education in Early Republican China]. Delivered by Prof. George Mak and moderated by Prof. Xiao Qinghe (肖清和教授), Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Peking University, the talk explored the Christian contributions to the spread of the National Phonetic Alphabet (注音字母, also known as Bopomofo) in early 20th-century China.

Focusing on the early history of the PPC (1918–1922), Prof. Mak argued that the PPC can be seen as a case of how Chinese Protestants and Western missionaries collaborated to serve the needs of the nascent Chinese republic with enthusiasm, expertise, and experience, contributing to the promotion of mass literacy and the spread of Mandarin as a national language.

[📕Staff Publication] "Social Media and Hong Kong Christian Communities: Diversity and Equality" by Prof. Ann Gillian Chu 朱安之 and Prof. Rachel Robertson

📒Abstract
Social media in Hong Kong Christian communities has been viewed in terms of social equalization, allowing laity to shape theology and community practices. But how is social media an equalizer for religious communities, and along which social dimensions? Drawing on Heidi A. Campbell’s “layers” and Pauline Hope Cheong’s “logics” of power, we offer a framework for examining how social media affects leadership roles, community practices, ideology and identity, and approaches to religious texts, in terms of whether these impacts are continuous with and complementary to existing power structures, displace traditional authority, or involve a dialectic between the two. Through case studies of Hong Kong Christian Key Opinion Leaders (KOL), we show displacements of official roles by lay leaders interacting with an underlying logic of continuity along traditional lines such as gender, social class, and sexual orientation. Online structures of community practice complement existing power structures, reinforcing traditional hierarchies of identity, ideology, and religious texts. We conclude by considering how theological approaches to dispossession may help Hong Kong Christian communities to enter a dialectic of challenges and opportunities for equality.
