📄 【 𝓝𝓮𝔀 𝓟𝓾𝓫𝓵𝓲𝓬𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 】✨✨

We are pleased to share that Professor Queenie L.J LI, Associate Professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The University of Hong Kong, has published a new systematic review and meta-analysis in Diabetes Care:

“𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐆𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐬: 𝐀 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚-𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬.”

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) does not end at delivery. For many women, it is an important marker of future risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic disease. The postpartum period therefore represents a critical window for prevention, recovery, and long-term health promotion.

This review found that postpartum dietary interventions were associated with modest but significant improvements in several intermediate cardiometabolic markers, including BMI, waist circumference, body weight, HbA1c, and insulin resistance measured by HOMA-IR. However, no significant improvements were observed in fasting glucose, 2-hour postprandial glucose, blood pressure, lipid profiles, or inflammatory markers.

These findings highlight the need to move beyond a “one-size-fits-all” approach and toward more personalised, phenotype-driven, and technology-enabled postpartum lifestyle strategies. Future interventions should consider women’s individual metabolic risk profiles, breastfeeding status, BMI, ethnicity, and lived realities during the demanding postpartum period.

Today, on International Midwives Day, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Hong Kong extends our heartfelt gratitude to midwives in Hong Kong and around the world for their unwavering dedication to women, newborns, and families.

Midwives stand by women and families during some of the most joyful, vulnerable, and transformative moments of life. With their professional clinical expertise, vigilant care, calm composure , and deep compassion, they support women through pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postnatal journey. They comfortmothers through moments of uncertainty and discomfort, while gently welcoming new life into the world.

We are honoured to learn from and collaborate closely with midwives. To every dedicated midwife: thank you for your courage, kindness, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of mothers and babies.
