HKU RIICH and the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine (University of Hong Kong) is grateful for the invitations from Professor Diane Slade (The Australian National University) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Our director Professor Olga Zayts-Spence and postdoctoral fellow Dr. Jasper Zhao Zhen Wu were delighted to take part in the two events that took place on 11-13 May 2026: the Hospital Authority Convention and the Asia Summit on Global Health. The events showcased a broad range of cutting-edge clinical and wellbeing technologies, and highlighted the strategic foci on:

· Transnational collaboration in global public health policy design;
· AI-inflected transformations in healthcare practice and research; and,
· Silver health innovations developed in clinical, corporate and research sectors

In resonance with these strategic foci, the RIICH&CHM has been actively taking part in the dialogues on silver health and AI-in-health. The two latest articles by Professor Zayts-Spence on silver health have been published the leading journal Social Sciences & Medicine, and the specialist journal Language & Health; the articles offer novel insights into the menopausal health of women in Greater China.

Professor Zayts-Spence and Dr. Wu will be presenting on AI and mental health literacy at the Conference on Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (ALAPP) in New York this September. Stay tuned for more updates!

Breaking the Silence on Menopause in Hong Kong 📢

Thank you to Hong Kong China News Agency (HKCNA) for the coverage: With the average life expectancy of women in Hong Kong rising to 88.7 years, nearly 30 years of a woman's life are spent in menopause. It is time for our healthcare systems and workplace environments to reflect this reality and address this need.

Prof. Olga Zayts-Spence, Director of the HKU Research and Impact Initiative on Communication in Healthcare and the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine, recently delivered a keynote speech at the "Hong Kong Women Health Symposium" and has officially joined the newly established The Hong Kong Menopause Society (THKMS) as a Council Member.

During the symposium, Prof. Zayts-Spence emphasized that menopause should not just be viewed as a biological phase, but as a priority for social and professional development. By strengthening community education and resource allocation, we can ensure that women continue to participate in society and thrive at every stage of their lives.

Let’s start the conversation—how do you think we can better support women’s health in our communities?

We are thrilled to announce a new study from our research group, published by our Director, Professor Olga Zayts-Spence, alongside co-authors Professor Mariana Lazzaro-Salazar and Dr. David Edmonds. This article investigates the lived experiences of menopause among Chinese women residing in Greater China (Hong Kong and mainland China). Specifically, it focuses on menopausal stigma, a focal theme identified by previous research on menopause.

This seminar marks the first activity since the relaunch of the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine, and we’re pleased to kick things off with this engaging online event.

Prof. Clare Dannenberg shared important perspectives on reimagining employability in higher education, emphasizing that "access is not the same as equity" and highlighting the need for responsive infrastructure like pastoral care. She also provided inspiring examples such as PACE to show how institutions can better support marginalized students.

This recap only covers part of what was discussed 😉 there's so much more to learn by participating in our event yourself! Be sure to join our future activities and continue the conversation!

Thank you to everyone who participated and to Prof. Clare for sharing her expertise. Together, we're reimagining the future of higher education.

Stay tuned for upcoming events!
