HKUST Soars 11 Places to Rank 33rd Globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027

HKUST is pleased to announce that it has risen significantly by 11 places to 33rd in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, marking a meaningful milestone as the University celebrates its 35th anniversary.

The result reflects years of steady progress, underpinned by the collective efforts of the entire University community. HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP described the advancement as “heartening,” noting that it speaks to the shared commitment of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

“It stands as clear evidence of our collective synergy, and reaffirms our strength in teaching, research and nurturing future talent,” she said, adding that continued support from the Hong Kong SAR Government has also been an important factor in the University’s development.

HKUST’s performance this year is supported by its consistent strength across key indicators, including academic reputation, research impact and international outlook.

While welcoming the result, Prof. Ip underscored that it is not an end in itself.
“Rankings serve as a useful benchmark, but more importantly they motivate us to keep improving,” she said. “HKUST will continue to harness our ‘can-do’ spirit to turn breakthroughs in research and teaching into tangible contributions for society, while nurturing globally minded leaders and supporting Hong Kong’s development.”

As the nation embarks on its 15th Five-Year Plan, this latest ranking underscores HKUST’s excellence in cultivating future leaders whose global competitiveness and international perspective are widely recognized by industry.

HKUST Develops World's First AI Slide-Free Pathology Imaging System

An HKUST research team led by Prof. Terence WONG Tsz-Wai, together with an HKUST-incubated medtech startup, PhoMedics Limited, has developed Glanzir®, the world's first AI-enabled, slide-free pathology imaging system. The system enables direct imaging of fresh tissue without the need for conventional procedures such as freezing, sectioning, and staining, producing histological images in approximately three minutes in an operating room setting for intraoperative assessment.

Compared with using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue, which is widely regarded as the gold standard in pathology, Glanzir® has demonstrated approximately 85% or higher diagnostic concordance. Upon completion of large-scale clinical trials, the team expects this concordance to improve further to around 95%. The technology has the potential to shorten intraoperative diagnostic time while preserving intact tissue for downstream analyses. The team plans to collaborate with public and private hospitals to advance clinical adoption, with the goal of improving overall diagnostic workflow efficiency.

🎬 “Where the Ink Stays” | HKUST AI Film Festival Spotlight

A single old photograph can hold more than a family portrait. It can carry a century of migration, memory and belonging.

“Where the Ink Stays” by DU Haoyu takes the spotlight in the third feature from the 2nd HKUST AI Film Festival.

This AI-generated art short film follows a Nanyang Chinese family across generations, beginning with an heirloom photograph marked with Chinese characters. From the tin mines of 1930s Malaya, to the preservation of Chinese education in the 1960s, and the digital restoration of family memories in the 2020s, the film traces how history is remembered and passed on.

At the heart of the story are the characters “平安”, meaning peace and safety. Across time, they become a message to the ancestral homeland and a symbol of what each generation chooses to protect.

Through AI-generated visuals, old photographs, written traces and historical fragments are reconnected, turning fading memories into an image journey that can be seen and felt.

The film reflects on diaspora, inheritance and cultural identity, asking what it means to preserve memory in a digital age.

More creative works are coming soon. Stay tuned for the next spotlight from the 2nd HKUST AI Film Festival.
