For the first time on record, Canada's population has now declined for 3 straight quarters. Statistics Canada estimates the population declined by 55,025 people in the first quarter of 2026, bringing the total population to 41.4 million.

The drop was largely driven by a decrease of nearly 118,000 non-permanent residents, while Canada also welcomed fewer permanent immigrants than it did during the same period last year.

The only other quarterly population decline on record happened in Q4 2020, during the height of COVID-19 restrictions — and even then, that decrease was just 1,232 people.

Are you travelling to (or through) the U.S. this summer?

Canada just updated its travel advisory for the U.S. ahead of the summer travel season and FIFA World Cup, and there are a few things Canadians might want to know before heading south.

The advisory warns that U.S. border agents can search your phone or laptop without giving a reason, and travellers staying longer than 30 days now have to register with the U.S. government.

The government is also warning about heavy border traffic during the World Cup, possible Ebola-related screening measures, hurricane season, extreme heat, wildfire smoke and the high cost of U.S. health care without insurance.

Do you have plans to travel internationally this summer?

The federal government just issued new travel advice for Canadians ahead of the busy summer travel season, warning that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could disrupt flights and travel plans almost anywhere in the world — not just in that region.

Officials say fuel shortages linked to the situation could lead to cancellations and could even impact access to goods and services at some destinations. Canadians are also being told to double-check their travel insurance, make sure they have extra money and medication in case they're stranded abroad, and keep a close eye on travel advisories.

Right now, there are 38 countries the government advises avoiding travel to entirely, and another 90 destinations where Canadians are urged to "exercise a high degree of caution."
