Dear all,

You are cordially invited to the film screening of The Day of Small Things (寂寂毛聞) , organised by CARing Kids™ from Department of Social Work and Social Administration, HKU, Paws Guardian Rescue Shelter (毛守救援), and KongStories (港故仔).

This documentary follows the everyday work of frontline rescuers who have been caring for Hong Kong’s stray animals over the past decade, offering an unfiltered look at the emotional and physical toll of rescue work. It also exposes the suffering inflicted on animals by people, from poaching using cruel trapping devices to neglect that leads to severe injury and abandonment, highlighting how these ongoing problems point to an urgent need for stronger animal protection laws and more robust public education. A post-screening sharing session will cover the latest statistics on rescued animals, frontline experiences in animal rescue, and a discussion of their implications for animal protection laws.

Dear Friends,
[Counselling Initiative Update] Invitation of joining Counselling Book Sharing Session
《遙遠的他--自殺遺屬的悲傷與重生》 (Cantonese)

We previously sent out the invitation for this sharing session. The response has been enthusiastic, and we have increased the number of available places and updated the venue. If you are interested but have not yet registered, please sign up through the link below. Thank you for your interest.

When a su***de occurs, public attention often focuses on the deceased, while the bereaved families—those who continue to live with loss—are overlooked. They carry profound grief, navigating life after losing a loved one.
The book in Chinese named 《遙遠的他--自殺遺屬的悲傷與重生》brings together ten powerful stories from su***de loss survivors, exploring how their lives have evolved more than a decade after their loss. Through their voices, we gain insight into grief, resilience, and the journey toward renewal.
This publication originates from a research project led by the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, HKU, in collaboration with The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong. The study focuses on individuals bereaved by su***de for over ten years, examining their life changes and current experiences.
You are cordially invited to join the Counselling Book Sharing Session, co-organized by the HKU SWSA Counselling Unit and The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong

Dear all,

You are cordially invited to the seminar titled “Income and Wealth Inequality in Hong Kong, 1981-2020” hosted by Dr. Li YANG from ZEW - Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research.

Here are the details:

Date : 11 June 2026 (Thursday)
Time : 11:00am- 12:30pm
Format : Hybrid (the Zoom link will be provided before the seminar)
Venue : Room 533, 5/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU
Registration : https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?guest=Y&ueid=107002

Abstract:

This paper combines national accounts, household surveys, fiscal data, wealth rankings and election polls, in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of income and wealth inequality in Hong Kong, as well as its impact on political cleavages over the 1981-2020 period. We find a very large rise in wage inequality since 1981, especially since the Handover of Hong Kong to China. Top 1% earners now receive a much larger fraction of the total wage bill than bottom 50% earners, while the opposite was true in pre-Handover Hong Kong. We also observe an enormous increase in the capital share and the top wealth share (normalized by national income) since 2000. Today Hong Kong’s very top wealth share (top 0.001%) is ranked at very top in the world. Finally, we find that the top income earners and high-income professions (such as executives and managers) are more likely to vote for pro-Beijing camp, while the bottom 85% income group, students and lower-income professionals are more likely to be pro-democratic..

About the speaker:

Li Yang / 杨利 is an Advanced Researcher at ZEW - Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research. He is also a research fellow of the World Inequality Lab at the Paris School of Economics.

Previously, he was a researcher in the World Bank DEC research group in Washington D.C. from 2013 to 2017, a Marie Curie research fellow at Paris School of Economics from 2018 to 2020. He was also the coordinator for East and South Asia at the World Inequality Lab from 2018 to 2021.

His main research interests pertain to income and wealth inequality, economic history and political economy. His research output has been published in leading scientific journals in both economics and sociology such as American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Growth, Journal of Public Economics, World Development, the World Bank Economic Review, European Journal of Political Economy and the British Journal of Sociology. Owing to their relevance for ongoing public debates, his findings have also widely been discussed in diverse media outlets, such as the Economist, Foreign Affairs, Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, etc.

Dear all,

You are cordially invited to the seminar titled “Human capital, unequal opportunities and productivity convergence: A global historical perspective, 1800–2100” hosted by Dr. Li YANG from ZEW - Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research.

Here are the details:

Date : 27 May 2026 (Wed)
Time : 11am-12:30pm
Format : Hybrid
Venue : Room 533, 5/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU
Registration : https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?guest=Y&ueid=106777

Abstract:

This paper constructs a new database on public expenditure and revenue and their components, particularly education and health expenditure, covering all world regions over the 1800–2025 period. Human capital expenditure has grown substantially, but with large and persistent inequalities. Public education expenditure per school-age individual in Sub-Saharan Africa is about 3% of the level observed in Europe and North America in 2025 at purchasing power parity, compared to 6% in 1980 and 4% in 1950. Human capital expenditure strongly correlates with productivity growth, especially for public education and in poor countries. Estimated returns from our macro-historical database are around 10%, in line with micro studies. Finally, we present simulations based on illustrative human capital expenditure trajectories over the 2025–2100 period. In particular, we analyze the conditions under which convergence in human capital expenditure could lead to global productivity convergence by 2100.

In light of the recent rescue efforts in Tai Po, our hearts are with every pet owner and caring individual affected by this difficult time. We know that losing a beloved companion can be deeply painful.

The Animal-Assisted Services Research Team of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at HKU has set up a dedicated “Pet Bereavement and Counselling” page to provide information, resources, and support.

During times like these, it is common to experience difficulties such as trouble sleeping, changes in appetite, persistent or intrusive memories, or feeling emotionally numb. These are natural responses to loss and uncertainty. Please allow yourself the space and time for emotional processing and remembrance. Research suggests that “Expressive Writing”, gently recording your inner thoughts and feelings, can be a helpful way to process and honour your emotions.

Losing a beloved companion is a profound life challenge. If you feel it may bring comfort, we gently invite you to write ‘A Letter to My Beloved Companion’; to preserve memories across the Rainbow Bridge, and carry your love forward through writing.

Should you wish to share your letter, you may send it to [email protected] (please indicate ‘A Letter to My Beloved Companion’ in the subject line). Our Animal-Assisted Services Research Team will receive your words with deep respect, compassion, and care.

Let us walk alongside one another through this time of loss and uncertainty.
