Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture - CSIC, CUHK

Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture - CSIC, CUHK Our mission is to promote academic studies of Islamic culture and to enhance the public understanding Since then ISI had strived to fulfill its mission.

Islam is not only one of the world’s major religions, but also the source of a global civilization. Since its emergence in the seventh-century Arabian Peninsula, Islam had spread to vast territories spanning Asia, Africa and Europe. At present, Muslims make up twenty percent of the world population. They are found in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries, even in some remote parts of the globe. Sin

ce the late 1970s, owing to the Islamic resurgence, the end of the Cold War, globalization as well as the geopolitics involving Muslim countries, Islam has widely attracted the attention of the media and the academia. With an unique geographic location and favorable academic atmosphere, Hong Kong yields unsaid advantages in Islamic Studies. First, there is a sizeable Muslim population in its mother country, China. Second, one of its South East Asian neighbours, Indonesia, is the most populous Muslim country in the world. With such a huge Muslim presence in its proximity, Hong Kong is well-positioned to study these communities of the Islamic faith. However, relatively speaking, Hong Kong is a late starter in the discipline. In order to promote Islamic Studies in Hong Kong, the Research Institute for the Humanities (RIH) came to an agreement with the Islamic Cultural Association (Hong Kong) on 31 July 2013. With the sponsorship provided by the latter under the agreement, RIH launched the ‘Islamic Studies Initiative’ (ISI) on 13 September 2013. It had organized a series of lectures delivered by international scholars, culminating in the First Distinguished Lectureship in Islamic Civilization. It had also produced the first-ever academic publication focused on localization of Islam in China. On 12 May 2015, ISI was approved by the management of the university to become the Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture (CSIC).

CSIC 10th Anniversary Celebration Forum
伊斯蘭文化研究中心十週年慶典暨研討會

You are cordially invited to the 10th Anniversary Celebration Forum of the Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture at CUHK.
誠邀出席香港中文大學伊斯蘭文化研究中心十周年慶典暨研討會

Established in 2015, our Centre is Hong Kong’s first and only academic unit dedicated to the study of Islam, focusing on its religion, culture, history, and contemporary Muslim communities, with a special emphasis on China.

Over the past decade, through dedicated research, meaningful partnerships, and efforts to share knowledge of Islamic culture on campus and beyond, we have helped foster greater cultural awareness in Hong Kong. We are delighted to see the government and public taking steps to make our city more Muslim-friendly. As we look to an increasingly interconnected future, nurturing cultural literacy—especially in Islamic culture—remains essential.

To celebrate this significant milestone, we proudly present our Celebration Forum, designed to align with the government’s recent Muslim-related initiatives. The forum will feature distinguished scholars and explore the topics of:
• Islam in China
• Islamic Culture and Halal Tourism in Hong Kong
• Islamic Culture and Finance in Hong Kong

The event is open to all, and we warmly welcome participants from all backgrounds — Muslims, non-Muslims, students, scholars, and anyone keen in Islamic culture.
