Professor Zhongjun Zhou holds the Chui Fook-Chuen Professorship in Molecular Medicine and is a distinguished biochemist and developmental biologist. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of aging and genetic disorders, with an initial emphasis on embryonic development through metalloproteinases and extracellular matrix remodeling. Over time, his work has expanded to investigate conditions affecting skeletal, hematopoietic, and renal systems.
Professor Zhou’s accolades include the Croucher Senior Fellowship, HKU Outstanding Research Award, State Torch Scholar, Pearl River Chair Professor, and Distinguished Oversea Young Chinese Scholar.
A key achievement of his career is establishing the world’s first mouse model for Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), a rare genetic disorder characterized by accelerated aging. His team has since identified multiple therapeutic targets for anti-aging vaccines and antibody-based drugs, aimed at treating metabolic and fibrotic diseases while promoting healthy aging in humans and animals. Additionally, Professor Zhou’s research has led to the development of transplantable human islet organoids for diabetes treatment, a project selected for funding under the RAISe+ Scheme.
Supported by the generous endowment from Mr Chui Wai-Kwan, Professor Zhou continues to pursue high-risk, high-reward research with the potential to address unmet medical needs and advance innovative therapies for patients worldwide.
