Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, CUHK

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, CUHK CUOG The Department oversees nearly 7,000 births annually, including cross-regional referrals from other districts of Hong Kong.

Established in 1983, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is now the largest public Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit and tertiary referral centre in Hong Kong, serving the 1.7 million people living in the New Territories East region. It offers a comprehensive service, covering not only the four major subspecialties of maternal fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, gynaecological oncology a

nd urogynaecology, but also paediatric and adolescent gynaecology and endoscopic surgery. Close geographic and academic connections with leading centres in mainland China mean that the Department regularly receives referrals of patients with a variety of complications. The Department is recognised by both the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the UK’s Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists as a training centre for the four aforementioned major subspecialties, and regularly attracts enthusiastic and energetic doctors, both from Hong Kong and overseas, for O&G specialty and subspecialty training. Trainees have invaluable opportunities to gain exposure to and acquire the skills necessary to perform state-of-the-art surgical procedures and laboratory techniques, including fetoscopic laser therapy, advanced prenatal genomic diagnosis and pre-implantation diagnosis, robotic gynaecological cancer surgery, and pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. The Department’s outstanding scientific and clinical research output is due to the concerted efforts of the departmental staff and international collaboration with renowned institutions. The aim is to train doctors not only to become clinically competent, but also to attain the highest intellectual, professional and ethical standards.

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the 1st BCM-CUHK Joint Symposium in Clinical Genetics.

Over the past decade there is a great leap in genetic and genomic technologies which has led to new discoveries of the genetic origin of diseases, improvement in diagnostic accuracy, as well as widening the application of genetic testing. In this inaugural symposium, we will connect the renowned experts from BCM with those in this region to bring to you the most update knowledge in this field.

We will also celebrate the establishment of joint CUHK-BCM Center of Medical Genetics, which aims to promote high-quality training and conduct cutting edge research in medical genetics.

Medical genetics is one of the most rapidly evolving areas in medical practice. The diagnosis of rare genetic diseases has become achievable because of advances in the related technology, especially in the genomic medicine. Exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing are emerging as even more powerful diagnostic tools that may revolutionize genetic diagnosis. The genomic approach will not only make diagnosis and risk assessment with greater precision, but also help to gain insights into the pathogenesis of genetic disorders, which may lead to new preventive measures or therapy. The program prepares graduates with practical knowledge in providing care for obstetrics, pediatric and adult patients with cytogenetic, biochemical, and developmental diseases, and gain laboratory experience in a chosen area of medical genetics.

We are organising a Workshop on Application of Whole Exome Sequencing in Prenatal and Paediatic period on 23 January 2016. Whole Exome Sequencing is a newly developed test for the identification of mutations that are causative or related to the medical disease. In contrast to single gene sequencing tests, the Whole Exome Sequencing test analyze the exons or coding regions of thousands of genes simultaneously using next-generation sequencing techniques.

The utilization of Whole Exome Sequencing in Paediatrics has been successful for the identification of rare genetic diseases. The recent introduction of prenatal whole exome sequencing for pregnancies with structural anomalies could potentially allow Obstetricians to diagnose rare genetic diseases in the prenatal period.
