「Humanities in Action」

'Humanities in Action' Series – Writing ✍️

"AI has no heart, but humans do" 🤖❤️

In an age where AI can instantly draft and refine articles,
Dr Chau Man Lut from the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies holds firm to his belief in the value of writing. ✍️📖

For him, what makes writing most precious
is capturing those moments that only ‘you’ can see,
those subtle emotions that only ‘you’ can feel.

While AI can generate countless stories,
it has no story of its own to tell.

Dr Chau describes himself as ‘a sower of seeds’ 🌱.
One of his students began to love writing poetry after taking his creative writing course.
"Sometimes the seeds of literature planted in students' hearts grow into banyan trees or coconut palms 🌳🌴—
what they become is up to the students themselves."

In this era where AI is everywhere 🤖🌍,
the world we know is still shaped by stories.

May every student, through writing, tell their own story—
one that moves themselves and touches others 💫.

The FHM ‘In-Depth Hong Kong Tour: So Lo Pun & Lai Chi Wo in Sha Tau Kok’ tour, was held on 22 May.

Blessed with beautiful weather, the taught postgraduate students visited Sha Tau Kok to experience the unique cultural atmosphere and natural beauty of the region firsthand.

This tour was an immersive learning experience that extended far beyond the classroom. Amidst the natural landscape, students listened to captivating stories of historical change shared by our guides, gaining insight into the true stories of the Hakka community. These meaningful interactions provided students with a multifaceted understanding of local customs and the evolution of village life, as well as a deeper perspective on the historical development of the New Territories and the government's efforts in rural conservation.

Based on the warm and sincere sharing from the Village Head of So Lo Pun, Ms Jane WONG and a local villager, their stories reminded the participants that history is not merely found in textbooks, it is a living memory meant to be experienced by walking through the land.

This tour has fostered cultural connections among the students. It is our hope that the insights gained and the emotional connection forged with this land will serve as a source of inspiration for our students in their future studies and personal growth.

FHM Internationalisation Flagship Event: ‘Hong Kong meets Kazakhstan 2: Humanities in Belt & Road’ Fosters Academic and Cultural Exchange

The Faculty of Humanities successfully hosted its internationalisation flagship event, ‘Hong Kong meets Kazakhstan 2: Humanities in Belt & Road’, on 23 April 2026. Building on the success of the first edition in 2024, the event brought together scholars, students, guests and cultural practitioners from Hong Kong and Kazakhstan for a full-day programme of academic and cultural exchange.

Featuring welcome remarks, musical performances, academic showcases, panel discussions, and a Kazakhstani film screening, the event explored key topics in language education, multilingualism, cultural studies and transnational film education. The discussions were insightful and engaging, further deepening participants’ understanding of the academic and cultural connections between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.

The event provided a meaningful platform for strengthening international partnerships and laid a strong foundation for future collaboration in humanities research, language education, student engagement and cultural exchange.

📚📖The MATCIL programme at EdUHK provides students with Field Experience opportunities.

Students are placed in partner schools in Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, and overseas, where they participate in the full teaching cycle—lesson planning, classroom observation, and teaching. The experience allows students to observe pedagogical differences across regions and educational stages, building practical teaching experience.

📍Personal Reflection

This hands-on experience—collaborating with Chinese language teachers on lesson planning, observing classes, and finally delivering lessons—was an invaluable chance.

After classes, I received constructive feedback from supervisors: specific suggestions for improvement, which accelerated my growth. I also attended staff meetings, deepening my understanding of the IB curriculum's educational philosophy and inquiry-based learning, and gaining a clearer view of how international schools operate.

In my interactions with students, I appreciate more the importance of respecting each student’s differences. I tried to guide and support them as a more experienced learner, instead of simply imparting knowledge. The Field Experience not only strengthened my teaching skills but also gave me a clearer direction and greater enthusiasm for my future work in education.
