宣公上人: 修學佛法,並不是要去追求極深奧的法;就本著「直心是道場,平常心是道」的法門,即能成佛道。可惜一般人未能常用直心,所以不能成就道業。因為不用直心修行,故在六道輪迴,生了又死,死了又生,在世間染苦為樂、背覺合塵、認賊作子,執著五欲﹝財、色、名、食、睡﹞,貪戀六塵﹝色、聲、香、味、觸、法﹞,故一天比一天迷誤,一天比一天墮落。
1.人執著「財」:希求財寶越多越好,金銀堆成山,還覺得不夠;越覺不夠,則越貪;越貪就越墮落、吝嗇。好像那些守財奴,有的人甚至不擇手段去欺騙壟斷世人之財,如老千集團。「財」這字在中文又叫「錢」,有二首偈解釋這錢字非常恰當:
"二戈爭金殺氣高,人人因它犯嘮叨;能會用者超三界,不會用者孽難逃。魚在水裡躍,人在市上鬧,不知為善德,虧心把孽造;
金銀堆成山,閉眼全都撂,空手見閻君,悔心把淚掉。"
想想這「錢」到底與我們有甚麼緊要關係?我們犯得著因錢而做出違背良心的事嗎?雖說錢是萬能,但也是萬惡。義斷情疏是因為錢,反目成仇也是因為錢,由於人人看不破錢,而惹出種種麻煩來。
2.「色」:色也把世人支配得迷迷糊糊,由生到死不醒悟。不單俗人放不下色,就是有些修行人也放不下色。
3.「名」:名也能害死人。有些人視名譽為第二生命。若其名譽被人破壞了,則拼著命也要對方賠償道歉。這就是執著於名上而不能解脫。
4.「食」:有的人財、色、名都不貪,就是放不下吃的,一天到晚要吃山珍海味,佳餚珍饈,把五臟大殿修得莊嚴無比,養得腦滿腸肥,等到死後去見閻王;閻王說道:「肥佬!你這麼肥,把你放進油鍋裡去炸,一定會炸出很多油來!」這是饕餮無度、貪口腹惹來的果報。
5.「睡」:有些人甚麼都不貪,就是放不下睡覺;少睡一點,就覺得疲累不堪。有個人說:「我打七十二天的餓七可以,但睡我可放不下!」所以世人在生時各有所迷,各有所執著,一旦大限臨頭悔之晚矣,再說:「早知道我應該多做些功德就好了。」唉!這時才說這種話太晚了!The study of Buddhism is not about pursuing deeply profound doctrines; it is based on the principle that "a sincere mind is the Way, and a calm mind is the Way." By following this path, one can attain Buddhahood. Unfortunately, most people do not consistently use a sincere mind, and as a result, they are unable to achieve the path. Because they do not cultivate a sincere mind, they remain trapped in the cycle of samsara, constantly being born and dying, finding pleasure in worldly suffering, becoming distracted from awakening, mistaking thieves for children, and clinging to the five desires—wealth, s*x, fame, food, and sleep—while indulging in the six sense pleasures (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and mental objects). Thus, day by day, they grow more confused and fall deeper into delusion.
Attachment to "Wealth": People crave wealth, desiring more and more, piling up gold and silver, yet still feeling it is insufficient. The more they feel it is lacking, the more greedy they become. The more greed takes root, the more they sink into corruption and miserliness. Some people, like hoarders, even resort to unscrupulous means to deceive and monopolize the wealth of others, much like the groups of swindlers. The word "wealth" (or "money") in Chinese is also "qian," and there are two verses that describe money appropriately:
"Two swords fight for gold, the air filled with killing intent;
Everyone, due to it, falls into endless chattering.
Those who can use it properly transcend the Three Realms,
Those who cannot, will inevitably fall into the consequences of their wrongdoings."
"Fish leap in the water, people stir in the marketplace,
Not knowing what is virtuous, creating karma with their hearts.
Gold and silver piled up high, with eyes closed, they let it all go,
Empty-handed before King Yama, shedding tears of regret."
What is the real relationship between "money" and us? Is it worth doing something against our conscience just for the sake of money? While money may seem all-powerful, it is also a source of all evils. Breaks in relationships, disputes, and even animosities often arise because people fail to see beyond the value of money.
Attachment to "Desire" (Sexual Attraction): Desire also leads people to be lost and confused, from birth to death, without awakening. It's not just ordinary people who can't let go of desire, but even some practitioners of the Dharma.
Attachment to "Fame": Fame can also destroy people. Some regard their reputation as their second life. If their reputation is harmed, they will do anything to seek compensation or an apology, even at the cost of their own life. This is the attachment to fame that prevents them from attaining liberation.
Attachment to "Food": Some people are not greedy for wealth, s*x, or fame, but they cannot let go of their attachment to food. They want to eat delicacies day and night, consuming rich dishes that build up their bodies to be strong and full. But when they die and face the King of Hell, the King may say, "Fatty! You are so bloated, if I put you in an oil pot, you’ll produce lots of oil!" This is the karmic result of indulging in gluttony and uncontrolled desires for food.
Attachment to "Sleep": Some people are not greedy for anything except sleep. If they don't get enough rest, they feel exhausted. One person even said, "I can fast for seventy-two days, but I cannot give up sleep!" So, in life, each person has their own delusions and attachments. But when the time of death approaches, it's too late to regret, and people may say, "I should have done more good deeds." Alas, by then, such words are meaningless!
In sum, all these attachments—whether to wealth, desire, fame, food, or sleep—are the sources of suffering, trapping people in samsara and preventing them from reaching liberation. (*English by Chatgpt)
