⭐ Celebrating MAJS Excellence – Dean’s List 2024–2025 ⭐
We are thrilled to share that 10 students from MAJS have been named to the 2024–2025 Dean’s List at the CUHK Faculty of Arts, with the Presentation Ceremony held in March 2026.

A proud moment for MAJS - Mr Lam Chun, Colin (Class of 2024) was selected as the representative speaker for all Faculty of Arts MA Dean’s List recipients. In his speech, Colin reflected on how MAJS’s strong academic support and overseas exchange opportunities shaped his journey - bringing classroom learning to life through meaningful cultural experiences.
He also mentioned our student-organised Tokyo study trip - a true highlight of the MAJS journey that deepens both academic and cultural understanding.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all Dean’s List recipients. May this achievement be a stepping stone to even greater success. Wish all our graduates a bright and promising future!

🎏 The Japanese Cultural Festival 2026 🌸

The Japanese Cultural Festival 2026, organised by the 34th CUHK Japanese Studies Society and CUHK Japanese Culture Society, was successfully held at the Cultural Square on April 8 and April 9.

This year’s festival featured a wide variety of exciting activities and a series of traditional Japanese booth games. A wide range of Japanese snacks, drinks and souvenirs was also available for purchase. The event also invited the New Asia Band of CUHK to perform several Japanese songs live on the first day, which greatly livened up the event.

In addition to the speech delivered by Professor Jeremy Yellen and the ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 9, congratulations were given to the Mizoguchi Scholarship 2024-2025 recipients (Au Siu Nga Audrey, Li Yi Ching, Yuen Hey Weng Symphony, and Zhang Xinran), in recognition of their outstanding academic performance. Year 4 student Audrey Au received the award on behalf of recipients currently on exchange in Japan.

The Department of Japanese Studies extends heartfelt thanks to the 34th Japanese Studies Society and Japanese Culture Society for their dedicated planning, and to the co-organizing societies, the Animation & Comic Society, and the Doujin Culture Society for their support, which made this year’s festival a great success.
We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s Japanese Cultural Festival!

Abstract:
This talk explores both what the Anthropocene is and what Japan might teach us as we navigate the coming decades of inprecedented disruption. Some have suggested that early modern Japan exemplified satisfactory stewardship of nature while others argue that even Tokugawa society pushed beyond environmental constraints. Today some hope that Japan's current urban consolidation and population decline will allow nature to recover and stabilize, but others dispute this contention. In exploring these debates, this talk puts Japan's history into conversation with Anthropocene science.

About the speaker:
Julia Adeney THOMAS teaches history at the University of Notre Dame (USA) and researches the intellectual history of Japan, photography as a political practice, and the challenge of the Anthropocene to historical practice. She is the author of Reconfiguring Modernity: Concepts of Nature in Japanese Ideology; Strata and Three Human Stories (with Jan Zalasiewicz); and The Anthropocene: A Multidisciplinary Approach (with geologists Mark Williams and Jan Zalasiewicz). Among her edited volumes are. Japan at Nature's Edge (with lan J. Miller and Brett Walker) and Altered Earth: n Getting the Anthropocene Right. She is currently working on The Historian's Task in the Anthropocene. Thomas's many articles bridge the divide between the humanities and the sciences to address our global environmental crisis. Although she lives in Chicago, her heart is in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia.

👤 Speaker: Dr. Chi Hang CHO, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Originating in eighteenth-century Europe, phrenology became popular in Japan from the late Meiji to the Taisho period. The most prominent phrenologist of the time, Sekiryushi, founded a Japanese phrenology magazine and toured the country to promote the discipline, which is now regarded as pseudoscience, and gained considerable public influence. Unlike the common Japanese translation kossōgaku ("study of bone"), he coined the term seisogaku ("study of nature"), reframing phrenology as a hybrid of scientific and philosophical thought. This talk examines how Sekiryushi interpreted phrenology through diverse Eastern thoughts, including Confucian ethics, Buddhist ideas, and Yijing cosmology (yin-yang and the wuxing [five phases]) etc., and argues that philosophy compensated for phrenology's lack of scientific rigor, facilitating its use as a tool for social and state reform.

Amid militarization, repression, and economic crisis, demands for emancipation and liberation among working-class and marginalized populations surged across the Japanese empire in the 1920s and early 1930s. This talk examines how proletarian cultural workers mobilized the international workers’ day May Day and the international auxiliary language Esperanto to organize solidarity across distance, difference, and multilingual publics. Tracking print and multimedia techniques and cross-border correspondences, I aim to show how May Day demonstrations and Esperanto pen pals enabled shared critiques of Japanese imperialism while revealing frictions of translation and hierarchy. Assembling solidarity emerged not as a finished program but as an experiment, expanding the boundaries of revolutionary subjectivity and rethinking the “proletariat” as a heterogeneous and relational political force.

📖 Prof. Michielsen’s research explores modern Japanese literature and culture, with a forthcoming book Conjunctures of Revolution on proletarian literature and international solidarity in Imperial Japan. His interests also extend to postwar and contemporary questions of labor, ecology, mental health, and technology.
