【Upcoming Exhibition⭐

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince in France, the University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, and the Alliance Française de Hong Kong jointly present The Little Prince and the Pilot—a multigenerational exhibition and thematic journey through the life of the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Rare photographs, letters, maps, personal items, manuscripts, and original editions introduce visitors to Saint-Exupéry—a legendary figure who embodied many roles at once: family man, friend, writer, painter, aviation pioneer, and explorer. By approaching his life from multiple perspectives, the exhibition offers a comprehensive portrait of the author’s extraordinary journey and the personal experiences that inspired The Little Prince.

The world-famous book takes centre stage as the key focus of this exhibition. Through design drawings and quotations, visitors can trace the character of the Little Prince and explore the story’s initial concept and creation, as well as key details of its editorial and publication process—revealing the author’s creative journey and deep philosophical thinking. A Hong Kong-exclusive display of character sculptures invites visitors to take photos and create lasting memories.

This exhibition is generously supported by IWC Schaffhausen and the HKU Museum Society.

Upcoming Lecture💬

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of the Art Market and How AI Can Help Fix It

How can artificial intelligence reshape the global art market? This lecture explores how AI is strengthening five critical pillars of the sector: transparency, trust, risk mitigation, integrated systems, and market intelligence. Through case studies from museums, auction houses, and private collections, it reveals how computer vision, provenance modelling, and automated risk analytics are transforming authentication, compliance, and due diligence. Rather than replacing connoisseurship, AI is shown as a powerful tool for augmenting human expertise, uncovering hidden patterns, and reducing uncertainty.

🗣️ Speakers: Dr Nicholas Eastaugh & Thereza Wells

Dr Nicholas Eastaugh is co-founder and CEO of Vasarik, and a leading authority in the scientific examination of paintings and technical art history. With a career spanning more than three decades, he has advised major auction houses, museums, collectors, and galleries worldwide on issues of attribution, authentication, and conservation. Trained in both physics (Durham University) and art history and conservation (Courtauld Institute of Art), his work bridges rigorous scientific analysis and art historical interpretation.

Thereza Wells is co-founder and COO of Vasarik, an AI-led company developing advanced computational tools for art historical analysis. An art historian, curator, and research consultant with over 30 years of experience, her career spans the museum, academic, and commercial art sectors, including work with institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery, London, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Co‑Creating an Imaginary House: A Parent‑Child Creative Workshop with Toshio Iwai

Inspired by The House with 100 Stories, this hands-on workshop invites parents and children to co-create imaginative cardboard houses under the guidance of Toshio Iwai. Transforming storytelling into three-dimensional play, participants will explore collage, drawing, and simple construction techniques to build layered spaces filled with wonder.

Through the creative process, children’s curiosity and observation skills are sparked, while parents rediscover the joy of making together. Alongside the activity, Iwai will share personal insights as a father—reflecting on how handmade toys, everyday materials, and playful interaction can nurture a child’s creativity. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to experience art as a shared journey, where imagination grows through making, and connection is built through creation. 💬

Beyond the 100-Story: Another Side of Toshio Iwai 👥

Behind the innocent and childlike picture book The House with 100 Stories, did you know that the creator is actually the youngest-ever winner of the Grand Prix at the Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan?

Focused on the creative journey behind The House of 100 Stories, Toshio Iwai will share his cross-disciplinary artistic vision. As a media artist, he uses interactivity and sound to inspire storytelling; as a father, he nurtures his creativity through a childlike spirit and the warmth of companionship; and as a picture book author, he builds layered worlds through delicate imagination. This lecture will explore how these three identities interweave, offering a glimpse into the technology, aesthetics, and familial bonds that shape his work—and tracing the singular path his practice has taken, from media art to picture books, each opening new ways of experiencing his art.💡

The University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong is honoured to present “100-Story 100 Stories: Toshio Iwai’s Art Journey”. As an internationally acclaimed illustrated book author and multimedia artist, Toshio Iwai firmly believes that creativity does not stem from a distant, unattainable talent, but rather from the textures of everyday life. In a world that is rapidly becoming digital and increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, hand-made objects and human companionship are especially precious.

The exhibition opens with the famed picture book series “The House with 100 Stories”, which is a favourite among children around the globe. Each floor holds a world of whimsical imagination. These stories inspire children to explore fearlessly and invite adults to rediscover curiosity and simplicity in their everyday life. Iwai’s creative journey began with a father’s love for his daughter. Starting from a simple numbering game, he wove fun and learning together through a distinctive visual language, creating picture books that accompanied her growth. Through visual associations, he guided her into realms of imagination. His works are a vivid reflection of the harmony between family bonds and creativity—within the pages flows not just a story, but the passing of imagination and affection across generations.

Tracing the footsteps of Iwai’s childhood memories, the exhibition displays the books that nurtured the roots of his creativity, alongside paper sculptures he lovingly crafted for his daughter. These seemingly simple materials hold profound educational wisdom and emotional depth. In an age dominated by digital technology, we are reminded of the importance of cherishing the creative freedom and the relationships built through the process of making things by hand.

The exhibition embraces the belief that every child is a future creator, and every family can be a cradle of love and imagination. Whether you are young, or young at heart, we invite you to step into this creative journey where warmth and inspiration intertwine. Within Iwai’s art journey, discover the happiness and the art of living, while creating a story that is uniquely yours.

An Enduring Passion: The 400 Year Dutch Love Affair with Chinese Porcelain

This talk explores the enduring relationship between the Netherlands and Chinese ceramics, tracing its origins, evolution, and relevance within today’s global art market. In the early seventeenth century, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) began importing large quantities of Chinese porcelain into Europe. At the time, Europe had no porcelain production, and Chinese ceramics were therefore seen as exotic, refined, and technically superior to their European counterparts. Chinese (and later also Japanese) porcelain quickly became a symbol of status and taste within Dutch society, becoming embedded in their domestic interiors and cultural identity, and laying the foundation for what can be described as a 400-year love affair.
