香港社會發展回顧項目是一個以保育及傳承香港歷史為宗旨的非牟利機構，於2007年由嘉道理家族開展，蒐藏家族及其業務的歷史檔案。藏件包括嘉道理家族、其業務及慈善項目的文件、圖片、口述歷史等，其中農業及工商業相關的檔案尤其豐富。
檔案庫對外開放，並積極舉辦公衆推廣活動。
The Hong Kong Heritage Project (HKHP) is a non-profit organisation established in 2007 by the Kadoorie Family to preserve history and promote heritage awareness in Hong Kong. It operates an archive which houses the records of the Kadoorie Family, their businesses and

charitable activities which include valuable historical information pertaining to Hong Kong's agriculture, commerce and industries.

HKHP Archive was delighted to participate as exhibitor in the Archives Expo of International Archives Week 2026 on 6th June (Saturday), organised by the Hong Kong Archives Society. HKHP’s archivists and volunteers, our Fans of Heritage, had the pleasure of sharing with the public the stories behind our collections and the meticulous work that go into the preservation of such precious documentary heritage. We were deeply encouraged by the public’s interest in archives and their passion for history.

【嘉道理農場暨植物園70週年歷史系列】

在嘉道理農業輔助會的歷史中，賀理士嘉道理無疑是靈魂人物。賀理士自少熱愛農業及園藝，戰後著力參與新界鄉郊發展等各項公共事務，經常與農民接觸，被譽為「新界先生」。

農耕從來都是極不穩定的行業，農民承受失收、蟲害、疫病等風險，遇上天災更隨時血本無歸。故除了前文提過的農業援助計劃，輔助會更在天災過後為農民提供特別支援。一名口述歷史受訪者憶述，1962年颱風溫黛吹襲，「一場颱風嚟，乜都掃晒，嗰時真係攞五蚊去買菜種都冇」，輔助會當時派發菜種和肥料，使菜農得以恢復生產。

一名昔日農場職員提到，賀理士對職工毫無架子，不管職位高低，他總是首先開口打招呼那位。有時雨天山路不好走，他會載年長伙計回家，「鄉下婆滿腳泥或者捲高褲腳又濕身，啲阿婆唔識開佢度車門，佢能夠自去落去開門俾嗰啲阿婆落車，嗱呢一樣呢，稍為有啲身家嘅，未必做得到。」

好幾位口述歷史受訪者，都異口同聲憶述賀理士派贈提子乾的事跡。賀理士認為提子乾能為孩童補充葡萄糖和維他命等營養素，他在往農場的路上，不時派給沿途見到的每一個小朋友，據說不少兒童因此認得賀理士的座駕。

嘉道理農業輔助會的大小計劃以至賀理士微小的關懷舉措，都是出於以人為本的善意，同時體現對人與環境之間連繫的關注。在貧窮和缺乏社會保障的時代中被扶一把，憨厚的農民視之為再造之恩，一生感銘於心。

【KFBG’s 70th Anniversary Series】

In the history of the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association, Horace Kadoorie had no doubt been an irreplaceable driving force. Being passionate about agriculture and horticulture from a young age and deeply devoted to public service particularly Hong Kong’s rural development post-WWII, he worked closely with farmers and earned the affectionate title “Mr New Territories.”

Farming was always uncertain, with constant risks from weather, pests, disease, and natural disasters. One oral history interviewee recalled Typhoon Wanda in 1962: “One typhoon swept everything away—we didn’t even have five dollars to buy seeds.” The Association promptly responded by distributing seeds and fertiliser to help farmers recover.

Former staff remembered Horace as humble and approachable—he greeted everyone first, regardless of rank. On rainy days, when roads became slippery, he would drive staff home himself. “Those old village women, with muddy feet or wet clothes, didn’t know how to open his car door. He would get out and open it for them. Anyone with some wealth might not be willing to do that.”

Quite a few interviewees had vivid recollection of Horace giving out raisins. Horace thought that raisins, being full of vitamins and glucose, are healthier treats for children and handed out raisins very often along his way to the farm. It was also said that many children recognised Horace’s car because of these little snacks.

Both KAAA’s various initiatives and Sir Hoarce’ small acts of kindness were driven by a simple, genuine care about people and their connection to the land. For the impoverished farmers struggling in a time without much social welfare, the timely help given was a life saver for which they remained externally grateful.

【嘉道理農場暨植物園70週年歷史系列】

檔案庫藏品中有一條舊聲軌，載錄了1950年代嘉道理農業輔助會和政府合作拍攝的農業資訊影片《農家樂》的旁白，影片向新界農民推廣養豬、種稻等技術，鼓勵有需要的農民尋求協助。

我們曾和香港城市大學創意媒體學院的學生合作，為這段旁白配上動畫，活現五十年代香港農村生活。無論是錄音内容，或是旁述者的腔調，聽起來都相當有趣。

昔日的農業資訊影片在新界鄉間巡迴播放。當時新界農村沒有電力供應、交通不便，影片放映夜是新奇娛樂，每次都吸引不少人觀賞。圖二為青衣島兒童在鄉事委員會門前空地全神貫注觀賞影片。

【KFBG’s 70th Anniversary Series】

Among our archival collections is an old audio track recording the narration of an agricultural film jointly made by the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association and the Government in the 1950s. It promotes their work and new techniques on pig farming and rice cultivation, encouraging the farmers in need to seek assistance.

To recreate the visual part of the film and bring to life the rural scenes of 1950s Hong Kong, we collaborated with students from the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong to develop an animation for this narration. Both the content of the recording and the narrator’s style and accent make it particularly fascinating to listen to.

In those days agricultural videos were screened in different villages of the New Territories, where electricity supply was unavailable and transport was inconvenient. Screening nights were a novel form of entertainment, attracting many viewers each time. Figure 2 shows children on Tsing Yi Island watching an agricultural movie intently in front of the Rural Committee office.

嘉道理農業輔助會（嘉道理農場暨植物園前身）的理念是：「授之以魚，不如授之以漁」，有別於一般慈善項目，它視農民為合作伙伴，並採取三方合作模式：KAAA提供資金和生產工具、農民投入勞力汗水、政府提供專業技術，而不是直接提供金錢援助。

在1951至70年代末輔助會的全盛時期，重點項目包括：養豬計劃、農業貸款基金、寡婦援助計劃、鄉郊水利交通建設和白牛石實驗農場。此外，輔助會自1968年開始為即將退役的啹喀兵提供免費綜合農耕課程，讓他們返回尼泊爾後能夠以現代方法務農為生。

隨著1970年代起新界都市化步伐加快，農耕人口外流，香港農業日漸式微，嘉道理農業輔助會亦因應社會改變轉型成為嘉道理農場。及至1995年1月20日，立法局通過「嘉道理農場暨植物園公司」條例，正式確立了該園的新目標，嘉道理農場暨植物園自此肩負起新使命，專注自然保育和教育，應對當代環境議題。

【KFBG’s 70th Anniversary Series】

The philosophy of the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association (KAAA, the predecessor of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) was: “It is better to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish.” Unlike typical charitable projects, it saw farmers as partners. With the support of the Government, it struck a tripartite partnership – capital and production tools from KAAA, hard work by the farmers and expertise and suitable policies by the Government.

The 1950s to the late 1970s marked the golden era of KAAA. Its major initiatives included the Pig Raising Scheme, the Agricultural Loan Fund, the Widows’ Assistance Scheme, rural water supply and transport infrastructure projects, and the Paak Ngau Shek Experimental Farm. From 1968 onward, KAAA also offered free comprehensive farming courses to retiring Gurkha soldiers, enabling them to make a living through modern agriculture upon returning to Nepal.

As urbanisation in the New Territories accelerated in the 1970s, the farming population dwindled, and agriculture in Hong Kong gradually declined. In response to these social changes, KAAA evolved to become Kadoorie Farm. With the passing of the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Corporation Ordinance on 20 January 1995, KFBG was officially incorporated with a new mission focusing on conservation and education.

【嘉道理農場暨植物園70週年歷史系列】

嘉道理農業輔助會 (Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association， 簡稱KAAA) 1950年代開始在大埔林村白牛石開山劈石，建造實驗農場。七十年前，白牛石實驗農場落成，自此成為輔助會的基地，及後成為今天的嘉道理農場暨植物園（KFGB）。由農業支援到保育教育，KFGB走過長路漫漫，與香港共同成長。在KFGB慶祝成立七十週年這重要里程，讓我們一同回顧其早年發展，以及從口述歷史中追溯不同人對KFGB的記憶，探古知今。

1945年二戰結束後，中國內地隨即爆發內戰，大批內地難民湧到香港，連同戰後回港的市民，香港人口由戰爭剛結束時的60餘萬，急增至1950年超過200萬。當中不少為農民，耕作是他們唯一謀生技能，於是他們落戶新界，冀繼續依靠土地過活。

羅蘭士和賀理士嘉道理於二戰後從上海回到香港重整家族業務，他們了解及關注到當時新界這批農民生活艱苦，遂於 1951年成立KAAA，以「自助人助」為信念，扶助農戶自力更生，協助成立輔助會的還包括漁農處兩位官員胡禮和胡挺生。於1950至1980年期間，受惠農民超過350,000名，昔日目不識丁的農民，也會認得「K三個A」，輔助會的工作在新界可謂無人不知。

【KFBG’s 70th Anniversary Series】

In the 1950s, the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association (KAAA) began carving out mountain for an experimental farming base in Paak Ngau Shek, Lam Tsuen, Tai Po. This farm, born 70 years ago, later evolved into today’s Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG). From its origin in agricultural assistance to its present-day mission in natural conservation and education, KFBG has been going hand in hand with Hong Kong. As KFBG celebrates its 70th anniversary, let us look back on its early development and trace people’s memories of the Farm through oral histories to better understand its legacy.

After WWII ended in 1945, the Chinese Mainland was quickly plunged into a civil war, prompting a large influx of refugees into Hong Kong. Along with returning residents, the city’s population soared from just over 600,000 at the end of the war to more than 2 million by 1950. Many among them were farmers who saw farming as their only means of livelihood. They settled in the New Territories, hoping to continue living off the land.

After returning from Shanghai to Hong Kong following the war to rebuild their family business, Lawrence and Horace Kadoorie became aware of the hardships faced by these farmers in the New Territories. In 1951, they founded the KAAA under the philosophy of “helping people to help themselves.” The association was also supported by two government officers, Norman Wright and T.S. Woo. Between the 1950s and 1980s, more than 350,000 farmers benefited from its assistance, and the name “K Triple A” became well recognised throughout the New Territories, even by the illiterate.

香港社會發展回顧項目早前應文化葫蘆邀請，配合「流動風景」展覽，主講專題講座「尖沙咀交通脈動—鐵路、酒店與旅遊的交響樂章」，利用自家檔案庫的藏品，分享位處尖沙咀南端的半島酒店和九廣鐵路及香港旅遊發展的故事。

尖沙咀南端一帶自二十世紀初起已是香港重要的交通樞杻，是九廣鐵路、巴士和渡輪的交匯處，區內亦有貨倉碼頭設施，以航運連繫東西，鐵路貫穿南北。

二十世紀初香港面對酒店房間嚴重不足，當政府決定興建新酒店時，尖沙咀這個接通世界的中轉站，成為不二之選。香港酒店公司以豪華鐵路酒店為構想藍本，用宏偉的建築設計、細緻的裝潢及現代化設備，創建「蘇彝士運河以東首屈一指的酒店」—1928年開幕的半島酒店。及至戰後民航日漸發展，距離啟德機場不遠的半島酒店亦扮演重要角色，半島和香港旅遊發展一直緊緊相連。

【“Rolling Hong Kong” – The Pulse of Tsim Sha Tsui】

It was our absolute pleasure to speak at Hulu Culture’s public talk “The Pulse of Tsim Sha Tsui: Where Railway, Hotel, and Tourism Intertwined” making use of our archival collections.

Since the early 20th century, the southern end of Tsim Sha Tsui has been a vital transportation hub in Hong Kong, serving as a junction for the Kowloon–Canton Railway, buses, and ferries. Docks and wharves in the area facilitated connection between East and West through shipping, while the railway linked North and South.

When Hong Kong faced a severe shortage of hotel rooms prompting the government to find land for a new hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui—already a gateway connecting Hong Kong to the world—was the obvious place of choice. The Hongkong Hotel Company who undertook the project modeled its vision on luxury railway hotels, creating “the finest hotel east of Suez” with grand architecture, refined interiors and modern facilities. This became the Peninsula Hotel, which opened in 1928. The hotel and Hong Kong’s tourism development have remained closely intertwined ever since.

【Join Us at Hulu Culture’s Public Talk and Latest Exhibition】

Hulu Culture’s brand-new exhibition “Rolling Hong Kong” will take visitors on a journey through the evolution of Hong Kong’s transportation, while also sharing popular travel destinations and urban memories from different eras. It explores how public transportation connects communities, shapes city culture, and inspires people to rediscover and experience the unique charm of a mobile Hong Kong.

As part of the exhibition programme, The Hong Kong Heritage Project will give a talk on “The Pulse of Tsim Sha Tsui: Where Railway, Hotel, and Tourism Intertwined”, in which we explore over a century of transformation in the area. It will highlight the district’s historic role as a vital transport hub connecting Hong Kong to the world, and the inseparable relationship between such role and tourism development. Notably, the site of today’s Peninsula Hotel was designated for hotel use precisely because of Tsim Sha Tsui’s unique position as a gateway in all directions.
