School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong

School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong The region’s first such institution, the SCM was founded to nurture a new generation of interdisciplinary artists and creative media talents.

The City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media (SCM) was founded in 1998 to nurture a new generation of interdisciplinary artists and creative media professionals, and to develop new ideas and technologies for the creative industries in Hong Kong, mainland China and abroad. State-of-the-art teaching and research facilities are brought together in a unique architectural setting designed

by Daniel Libeskind that is a hub for innovation and discovery in Asia. SCM students are trained across disciplines spanning computer science, fine arts, visual design, creative writing, cultural studies and digital technology; a pedagogy that bridges the boundaries between art and science and integrates traditional and new media. The school values applied creativity, cultural awareness, and critical thinking as much as business sense and entrepreneurial success. SCM's internationally recruited faculty members are amongst the foremost artists and researchers in the field, and they bring a global perspective to the school.

Hong Kong animation is making its mark on the world stage, and SCM talent is at the heart of it. 🎬

Hot on the heels of the recent South China Morning Post feature on Hong Kong's independent animation wave, NOWNESS Asia has released a new curated playlist, Relentless Melt No. 48: Touching Without Touching, showcasing nine brand-new experimental animation films by SCM students. Together, these pieces spotlight the School of Creative Media's distinctive leadership in abstract and non-narrative work, and underline how local talent is gaining visibility on influential international platforms.

The SCMP article highlights Associate Professor Max Hattler, whose curatorial platform Relentless Melt has become a vital international launchpad for local abstract moving image work, alongside our celebrated MFA alumna Florence Lee Yuk-ki, whose poetic and non-traditional visual style has captured the attention of M+ Museum and the Annecy International Animation Festival.

This speaks to exactly where SCM stands in Hong Kong's higher education landscape: we don't just teach commercial production, we challenge the industry by treating animation as a serious contemporary art form.

Two screenings. Two directors. Countless conversations worth having. 🎬

Over the past few months, our Future Cinema played host to two remarkable films that reminded us why moving image sits at the heart of media studies.

"Four Trails" — Robin Lee's acclaimed documentary brought a powerful lens to the screen, sparking conversations long after the credits rolled. Then came "Someone Like Me", a compelling feature film by our very own alumna Tam Wai Ching (BACM) — proving that the stories nurtured here continue to resonate far beyond our campus.

Both evenings were followed by post-screening talks with the directors themselves — honest, thought-provoking, and deeply inspiring for students and film lovers alike.

Two occasions. Two voices. One shared passion for the moving image. 🎞️

🗣️Seminar | Farewell Lecture by Professor Christian Wagner - On Crowds, Machines, Intelligence and Creativity✨

We are honored to invite you to the farewell seminar of Prof. Christian Wagner, Chair Professor in the School of Creative Media.

Marking the culmination of 40 years of research in collective and artificial intelligence, this lecture serves as both a retrospective journey and a forward-looking "Quo Vadis" reflection. Prof. Wagner will trace the evolution of IT-enabled problem solving, from early computational limitations to the power of human crowdsourcing, and finally to the rise of modern multimodal models that perceive patterns no human ever named.

💬Conference | AI and Cultural Production Workshop – Session 2🤖

The AI and Cultural Production Workshop is a two-part workshop series exploring the profound, transformative, and often contentious relationships between artificial intelligence and cultural production. Over recent years, AI has evolved far beyond its role as a mere technical tool, becoming a powerful and pervasive force shaping contemporary cultural practices. This shift challenges conventional notions of authorship, creativity, agency, and responsibility across a broad spectrum of artistic fields. These include AI-enabled literature, music, visual arts, narrative construction, translation, and collaborative creative processes, where human-machine interaction redefines the boundaries of artistic expression.

Featuring three distinguished speakers, representing a spectrum of expertise—from leading scholars who critically analyze AI’s impact on culture to visionary artists who harness AI as a creative partner. Their presentations will offer diverse insights and inspire thoughtful discussions on how AI continues to reshape the landscape of cultural production in innovative and sometimes unexpected ways.
