Happy New Year of the Horse! There is a “red-pocket-giving” tradition in every Lunar year. The annual consumption of 320 million red pockets by Hong Kong people is equivalent to deforesting 16,300 trees. “Lai See Packets Reuse and Recycle Program” organized by Greeners Action aims to remind people to protect the environment while enjoying the New Year tradition. Starting from 27 February to 26 March 2026, lai see packet collection boxes will be placed at the following locations to collect used lai see packets:

📍Blue Zone, U-Concourse, Floor 4, Yeung Kin Man Academic Building (YEUNG)
📍Outside G1501, Security Control Counter, Floor 1, YEUNG
📍Room G507, Security Control Counter, G/F, Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building
📍Room 5208, Security Control Counter, Floor 5, Lower Block, Lau Ming Wai Academic Building
📍Inside the main entrance, Floor 1, Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre
📍Entrance of Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall (Hall 8), Student Residence (Kowloon Tong Compound)
📍Security House of Tak Chee Yuen
📍Main entrance to car park of Nam Shan Yuen
📍Adjacent to Jockey Club Hall, Academic Exchange Building
📍Security Counter, 2-006, 2/F, CityUHK International Centre

Your support to the “Lai See Packets Reuse and Recycle Program” is highly appreciated. When opening red packets, avoid damaging the envelopes and place them into the collection box. If you have any queries, please call FMO Help Desk at 3442 8833.

🎉🏆CityUHK Won Two Awards in the Commendation Scheme on Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste 2024/25🏆🎉

CityUHK is committed to the principles of sustainability and continual improvement of its environmental performance, recognizing its obligations both locally and globally, to the present and succeeding generations.

The commitment is reflected in winning the “Bronze Award” and “Award for Promotion” in the category of “Other Types of Buildings” under the “Commendation Scheme on Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste 2024/25” (the Scheme). The Scheme is organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) on a yearly basis, which aims at encouraging Commercial and Industrial (C&I) premises to monitor the effectiveness of the existing mechanisms, and keep improving the waste separation and recovery arrangements.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole CityUHK Community for your continual support to the waste reduction as well as the sustainability achievements at the University.

🥮Mooncakes Collection for the Needy🥮

To promote sustainability and show care for the needy, the University has signed the “Gift Wise Charter” organized by Food Grace. The University is committed to:

• NOT use mooncakes as gifts to partners;
• REFRAIN from receiving mooncakes from partners, and
• ENCOURAGE employees to celebrate a green Mid-Autumn Festival by reducing food wastage.

As a further step to help reduce mooncake wastage, Food Grace will send surplus mooncakes to the needy in the community before the Festival. The CityUHK Campus mooncakes collection arrangements are set out below, and you are highly encouraged to make your contribution:

⚡💡Energy Saving Charter 2025💡⚡

The University has signed up to the Energy Saving Charter 2025 (“Charter”), which is co-launched by the Environmental and Ecology Bureau and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.

Your support is essential for the University to fulfill this commitment. We would like to remind you of the following energy-saving tips on switching off appliances and systems when not in use:

- Lights, air-conditioners should be switched off in areas that are unoccupied. With few people working in the office, switch off the non-essential lighting and use task lighting to directly illuminate work areas.
- Part of the lift and escalator can be idled during non-peak hours.
- Use appliances with timer control or automatically switch-off control functions to avoid leaving appliances in standby mode for a long period. Unplug all equipment chargers and adapters when they are not in use. Please read the leaflet on Reducing Standby Power Consumption.
- Switching off the computer screen can save more energy instead of letting the "screen saver" run.
- When leaving the office, arrange for the last man out to check and switch off the power source to all air-conditioners, lighting, and office equipment that are not in use.
