The Centre for Chinese Family Studies (CCFS) is to host an online seminar on 15 May (Friday). Please find the detailed information as follows:

Topic: Explaining Low Desired Fertility in Urban China

Speaker: Prof. Shuang Chen, Professor at the Department of Social Policy, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

Time: 4:00pm-5:30pm, 15 May 2026 (Friday, HK Time)

Venue: Zoom

Language: English

Registration: https://cloud.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/mycuform/view.php?id=4272597

About the seminar: Ideal family sizes remain at or above two in most low-fertility settings, but subreplacement fertility ideals have been reported for urban China. What explains the low fertility ideals in urban China? This seminar presents two recent papers examining the puzzle. The first paper addresses a long-standing debate about how "genuine" reported ideal family sizes are in the presence of policy restrictions on family size. The second paper examines whether growing up as an only child can lead to lower fertility ideals. Explaining China's distinctly low fertility ideals sheds new light on the long-term impact of family planning policies and a key mechanism underlying the "Low-Fertility Trap" hypothesis, with implications for other low-fertility societies.

About the speaker: Dr Shuang Chen is an assistant professor at the Department of Social Policy of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). A demographer by training, Shuang's addresses questions at the intersection of demography, education, and social policy. Her current research focuses on the causes and consequences of low fertility in China and the role of education in fertility transitions. Shuang’s work has appeared in Demography, Population Studies, and International Journal of Educational Development. Shuang holds a PhD in Demography and Social Policy from Princeton University and received her B.S. and M.A. from Stanford University

Topic: Longitudinal Employment Patterns and Parental Health: A Cross-Country Look

Speaker: Prof. Wen-Jui Han, Professor at Silver School of Social Work, New York University

Time: 2:30pm-4:00pm, 14 May 2026 (Thursday, HK Time)

Venue: FYB_UG02 (UG/F), CUHK (see the address on Google Maps)

Language: English

Registration: https://cloud.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/mycuform/view.php?id=4269965

About the seminar: Employment provides valuable resources to afford a stable standard of living, but the rise of the digital and service economy since the 1980s has made work more unstable and insecure for many families. Nonstandard and unpredictable schedules can harm health. This study adopts a cross-country lens to examine how parents’ work patterns over time relate to physical and mental health using longitudinal data from Australia, Germany, the UK, and the US. We identified 4–6 distinct work patterns across life stages and found that not working or having volatile work arrangements is linked to poorer health, though the persistence and magnitude of these associations vary by country. Our findings underscore the important role of employment in shaping health and its potential impact on intergenerational transmission of employment and health vulnerabilities.

About the speaker: Wen-Jui Han is a Professor at Silver School of Social Work, New York University. She earned her PhD from School of Social Work, Columbia University. The ultimate goal of Dr. Han’s research is to advance our understanding of factors that will improve the individual well-being including children and their families. To this end, she has investigated relationships between parental behaviors and child health and development, the effects of policies on parental behaviors and child outcomes, and precarious employment and later health and well-being. Her work has been published in leading academic journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, Child Development, Demography, Journal of Marriage and Family, etc. Dr. Han currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Social Welfare.
