On the morning of May 8, Professor James St. Andrรฉ, Chair of the Department of Translation at CUHK, was invited to deliver a lecture at Zhejiang University titled โ€œExploring 19th-Century Chinese-English Translation History with Digital Humanities Tools: Promises and Prospects.โ€

Focusing on his research on nineteenth-century Chinese-English translators, Professor St. Andrรฉ demonstrated how social network analysis and digital humanities methods can open new pathways in translation history. By integrating 63 types of dataโ€”including biographical details, publication records, places of work, and institutional affiliationsโ€”he has developed a database of 262 translators, drawing on global library catalogues, nineteenth-century English-language periodicals, missionary biographies, and East India Company archives. The project combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to map networks, relationships, and historical trajectories within this translation community.

The lecture was followed by a lively and engaging discussion with faculty and students. We are delighted to see the impact of CUHK Translationโ€™s research beyond Hong Kong and are grateful to our colleagues at Zhejiang University for their warm hospitality.

To celebrate the retirement of Professor Lawrence Wang-chi Wong, the Department of Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong organized the publication of the festschrift Translation and the History of Knowledge โ€“ A Festschrift for Lawrence Wang-chi Wong. The book launch was held on the afternoon of May 22, 2026, at the Cheng Yu Tung Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Warm and dignified in atmosphere, the event marked not only the publication of a new volume, but also a moving occasion for teachers, colleagues, friends, and students to gather in tribute and extend their heartfelt blessings to Professor Wong.

Contributors to the festschrift gathered at the event to pay tribute to Professor Wong, expressing their deepest gratitude for his outstanding contributions to translation studies and the history of translation in China, while extending their warmest wishes for his retirement. More than an academic occasion, the gathering was a moving celebration of a beloved teacher, mentor, colleague, and scholar whose influence has touched many lives. The event was open to the public and warmly received, attracting over fifty students, faculty members, and academic peers in person, alongside an online audience that peaked at over eighty concurrent viewers.

The publication of this festschrift and the success of the launch serve not only as a fond retrospective of Professor Wongโ€™s distinguished academic career, but also as a lasting testament to his extraordinary erudition, intellectual generosity, and unwavering dedication to the field. His scholarship, mentorship, and gracious spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of scholars.

It's been almost a year since my first SI job on campus, and this journey is fascinating! From staff briefing sessions to college assemblies and formal meetings, these SI jobs have equipped me with practical experiences that I would never have gained in the classroom.

I've taken a few interpreting courses before, but SI in the real world could be very different. While we mostly get the presentation slides or the meeting documents, there could still be a lot of information that we need to prepare, for example some other movies by the same director in a post-screening talk. Preparation time is usually limited, particularly when the documents are confidential, but since SI interpreters work in pairs, it's always teamwork. Although it's impossible to be "fully prepared" as an interpreter, research and communication are indeed useful.

I also had a taste of "expect the unexpected" which I had heard of in lessons. We're trained to use professional equipment in SI booths, but we may not even have a booth in real life. It's also common that the speakers don't follow their scripts, but it's most important to remain professional and do our best under any circumstances, even when the speaker starts singing in Hakka.

All in all, the SI student intern experience is not only a way of putting classroom knowledge into practice, but also a very unique part of my university life as a translation major student.

If you think your life lacks some excitement, take on interpreting tasks, and you may encounter unexpected adventures.

In the past year, the university and the department gave me many opportunities to gain hands-on experience in simultaneous interpreting, including meetings and conferencesโ€”Council meetings, Senate meetings, communication sessions, as well as various activitiesโ€”movie screenings, indoor and outdoor forums.

I have been to an isolated island and conducted SI by holding a walkie-talkie and sitting on plastic stools. Although it seems a bit primitive, it is an SI job with the most fun. While on the island, I took a stroll through the indigenous village and learned about their history.

I have also helped at the Council meeting, where they gave you a stack of 5-cm-thick documents and one precious hour for preparation. Then, they discuss topics that I havenโ€™t the faintest idea. All I could do was grasp what I could understand and use what I had learned to deliver results. After this SI job, I told myself there's nothing I can't handle.

They say nothing's new under the sun, but there's always something new in each SI job. That being said, don't be discouraged by the uncertainties. Just say yes to an opportunity and prepare with what you learned. Take the surprises as souvenirs and equip yourself with the experience you gained.

Weโ€™re thrilled to celebrate the publication of two new books by Professor Lawrence Wang-chi Wong, recently released by Shanghai Oriental Press.
The first is a revised edition of his well-known study of the principle of โ€œxin, da, yaโ€ (faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance). First published in 1999, the book has long been regarded as a foundational text in Chinese translation studies. This new edition revisits the original work, with updates and revisions that reflect Professor Wongโ€™s continued engagement with the subject over the years.
The second book grows out of his more recent research on translation and diplomacy in the Qing dynasty. Focusing on Sino-British relations, it explores how translation worked in practiceโ€”in negotiations, official correspondence, and diplomatic exchangesโ€”and what that meant for relations between China and Britain at the time.
Congratulations to Professor Wong on this outstanding achievement! ๐Ÿ‘โœจ

What a privilege to receive the Faculty of Arts Exemplary Teaching Award for 2025! It has been a joy to teach courses across translation theory, comparative linguistics, and practical translation workshop. Iโ€™m thrilled that my students found theoretical and linguistic knowledge not only useful for their translation practice, but perhaps even a little fun. As we navigate the GenAI era, I hope the knowledge we explored together will continue to hone their critical reading and evaluation skills.
Teaching is very much a two-way street, and I have learnt so much from my students, whose diverse and insightful perspectives constantly illuminated my own blind spots. I am truly humbled to work alongside such inspiring colleagues and inquisitive students at CUHK Translation.
