🎉CUHK welcomes global leaders to the APRU 30th Annual Presidents’ Meeting!

Over 150 representatives from 47 leading institutions across 19 countries and regions, including university presidents and senior leaders, will gather in Hong Kong for this important occasion. 🤝✨

Under the theme “The Next Horizon: Shaping Universities for a Changing World,” the Annual Presidents' Meeting will discuss essential qualities for today's graduates, advance the debate on different formats of university education, and explore how universities can remain a critical and sustainable pillar of education in the 21st century.

⚡Lightning Talk Highlights: Professor Cecilia Chun, Director of the CUHK Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research, and Professor Winnie W.S. 🎉 Record high! CUHK climbs to 18th in the world!

CUHK has risen to 18th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, climbing 14 places from last year and entering the global top 20 for the first time, marking the University's highest-ever ranking.

CUHK recorded notable improvements across multiple indicators, including employer reputation, international research network, international student ratio and faculty student ratio. The University also once again achieved a perfect score for international faculty ratio, reinforcing its position as a leading research university in Asia with global recognition.

This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, staff and alumni. Building on this milestone, the University will continue to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, strengthen its global academic networks and research impact, to nurture outstanding talent for China and the international community.

Meet Ma Ho Cheung, a Year 3 Chinese Studies student from Chung Chi College 📚

During his exchange at University College Maastricht in the Netherlands, he stepped out of his comfort zone—taking courses in literature, political philosophy, and cultural studies, while also joining a local university dance team and learning to dance from scratch 💃

Through this experience, he broadened his global perspective and grew more confident in expressing new ideas, preparing himself for his future academic journey.

CUHK pioneers international education and is committed to broadening students’ global horizons. Since its founding, the University has developed strong exchange partnerships with around 290 leading institutions in 38 countries or regions worldwide.

這相當於在一秒鐘內下載數十部高畫質電影。隨著 AI 發展跨越單一數據中心，如此龐大的數據傳輸已成為技術關鍵。中大電子工程學系助理教授黃超然教授領導團隊研發出新型「集成式全光訊號處理器」(OSP)。

⚡What does 1.6 Tb/s mean? CUHK develops optical processor to correct distorted signals directly with light✨

Imagine downloading dozens of HD movies in a single second. As AI systems expand across data centres, this level of massive bandwidth has become indispensable. A research team led by Professor Huang Chaoran from CUHK Electronic Engineering has developed a novel All-Optical Signal Processor (OSP) to meet this demand.

This achievement helps overcome the bottlenecks of conventional digital signal processing (DSP) technologies in terms of speed, latency and power consumption, offering a disruptive solution for ultra-low-latency and green AI supercomputing. 於北京大學交流期間，Miranda 不僅體驗了另一所頂尖學府的校園生活，更以歷史系學生的視角重新認識北京這座古今交融的城市。

初到北京時，她經歷了她形容為「沒有語言障礙的文化差異」，但很快便融入當地生活，穿梭於校園、胡同與社區之間。透過非物質文化遺產體驗及口述歷史訪談，她有機會走出課堂，從第一身了解歷史如何透過記憶、技藝與日常生活代代相傳。

這段旅程讓她深刻體會到，歷史不只存在於書本和檔案之中，更蘊藏於人們的故事與城市的脈絡之間。對 Miranda 而言，北京不僅是一個交流目的地，更是一座充滿生命力的「活歷史教室」。

除了收穫寶貴的學習經歷，她亦結識了來自不同背景的新朋友，並愛上了北京烤鴨、餃子的味道，以及那句充滿地道風味的「好咧」。

Meet Miranda Li Xiang Yu, a Year 3 History student from United College 📚

During her exchange at Peking University, Miranda experienced more than life on another campus. As a History major, she saw Beijing through a unique lens—one shaped by the city's rich heritage, living traditions, and stories carried across generations.

What she described as “cultural difference without a language barrier” soon became an opportunity for deeper exploration. Beyond the classroom, she immersed herself in local life, engaging in student-led activities, exploring Beijing's neighbourhoods, and building meaningful friendships. Through hands-on intangible cultural heritage experiences and oral history interviews, she gained firsthand insight into how history is preserved not only in archives, but also in memories, traditions, and everyday life.

The experience broadened her academic perspective and reinforced her belief that history is a living subject, shaped by both places and people. For Miranda, Beijing was more than an exchange destination—it became a living classroom that brought history to life.

Of course, she will also miss the taste of Peking duck, dumplings, and the local phrase “hao le”.

🎉Congratulations to CUHK students for sweeping 19 awards at the Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, achieving the joint-highest tally of any institution in the city! Students demonstrated solid academic foundations and creativity, as well as the ability to apply knowledge to solving practical problems.

Among them, Design and Mechanism Analysis of an Inertia-driven Amphibious Robot, which won first prize in the Innovation category (Mathematics and Physics / Mechanics and Control Systems), features a centimetre-scale amphibious robot. Its designers see applications in rescue, inspection and monitoring work in confined or hazardous environments.

The competition, organised annually by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, is the city’s principal pipeline to the national stage. Winning projects will represent the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest, the “Challenge Cup” China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition and the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition. This year, the winning projects will also have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong and their respective institutions to compete at international competitions and exhibitions. APRU is a network of 64 leading universities across Asia, North America, South America, and Australasia across 20 economies, fostering collaboration to address global challenges through research, policy dialogue, and academic partnership.
