(Preliminary Findings from an Equity-oriented Social Prescribing Intervention: Community Health Worker Training in Housing-precarious Migrant Communities in Hong Kong),關於陳盈教授團隊在香港以培養社區健康工作者實踐社會處方的工作和研究。

🎉Congratulations to Prof. Crystal Chan and her team!

JCSPHPC Research Assistant Professor Crystal Chan, together with her team, has been honoured with the Best Poster Presentation Award at the International Social Prescribing Conference 2026 in Kyoto, Japan.

The award-winning poster, titled "Preliminary Findings from an Equity-oriented Social Prescribing Intervention: Community Health Worker Training in Housing-precarious Migrant Communities in Hong Kong", focuses on the team’s efforts and study in exercising social prescribing through the training and deployment of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Hong Kong.

Building on the evidence that addressing social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, social connectivity, housing and education, is key to improving health outcomes, social prescribing is a means of connecting patients to a range of non-clinical services in the community to address the underlying causes of patients’ health and well-being issues, as opposed to simply treating symptoms.

Funded by the ZeShan Foundation and Kerry Group, Prof. Chan’s team partnered with the Caritas Youth and Community Service on the Hub 13 project. The team evaluated a 30-hour multicultural CHW upskilling training programme designed to equip trainees with the skills to administer basic health screenings and interpret clinical results for migrant residents of inadequate housing.

Findings showed that the programme enhanced general helpfulness and life satisfaction among local Chinese and migrant trainee groups, supporting a task-shifting approach in which CHWs extend social prescribing beyond clinical settings into the community, and help build community capacity across diverse populations.

JCSPHPC congratulates Prof. Chan and her team on their success and extends our gratitude for their commitment to advancing community-based primary care in Hong Kong. 💐

𝗝𝗖𝗦𝗣𝗛𝗣𝗖 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗚𝗖 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲

𝗗𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻-𝗽𝗼𝗸 from the 𝗦.𝗛. 𝗛𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, has been awarded funding under the Hong Kong Research Grants Council’s (RGC) Junior Research Fellow Scheme (JRFS), in recognition of his outstanding contributions and potential in infectious disease research.

Dr Chan’s research focuses on enhancing community-level surveillance of respiratory infections by integrating multiplex rapid antigen tests (RATs) into participatory surveillance systems. His work addresses the limitations of current approaches, which rely primarily on self-reported symptoms and lack the ability to identify circulating pathogens.

Supported by the RGC and CUHK, Dr Chan launched a population-based cohort study in 2026 targeting 2,000 random households in Hong Kong. Over a two-year study period, participants are invited to perform multiplex RATs when they develop influenza-like symptoms, and to report their test results, symptoms, and healthcare-seeking behaviours through online questionnaires. The study also collects data on social interactions, infection control practices, and vaccination uptake for assessing community exposure risks and disease transmission patterns.

By analysing multiplex RAT data, the study aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding on the epidemiology of different respiratory pathogens within the community. The findings will also be compared with existing laboratory surveillance data to evaluate the strengths and limitations of different surveillance approaches. The research is expected to contribute to the development of more flexible and scalable surveillance strategies for enhancing outbreak monitoring and preparedness in the community.
