【Decoding Brain Signals: How Prof. Urs Maurer Uses Neuroscience to Move the Diagnosis Window for Children with Dyslexia】
"Dyslexia is a brain-based disorder—it is a characteristic of neurobiological mechanisms, not a lack of capability." — Prof. Urs Maurer, Department of Psychology, CUHK.
Within Hong Kong's current educational framework, children with dyslexia often have to wait until primary two or three to be formally diagnosed through reading tests. Before that official diagnosis, they endure nearly two years of frustration, anxiety, and academic struggle. For any family, this two-year wait is far too long and painful.
To change this reality, Prof. Urs Maurer—originally from Switzerland and now dedicated to research and teaching in Hong Kong for over eleven years—is leading a diverse research team at CUHK to pioneer early identification solutions. By utilizing advanced Electroencephalography (EEG) and Event-Related Potential (ERP) techniques, his lab applies computational "averaging" to extract clean, genuine neural responses to words from complex brain wave artifacts.
Prof. Maurer represents the finest tradition of CUHK faculty: combining world-class academic elite expertise (with roots in Zurich and New York) with profound humanistic care. His mission is clear and impactful—to shift the diagnostic window earlier, allowing timely clinical intervention to precede psychological frustration.
Bridging the gap between rigorous scientific data and warm clinical practice to safeguard the joy of reading for every child—this is the real-world impact of neuroscientific research.
