【Decoding Brain Signals: How Prof. Urs Maurer Uses Neuroscience to Move the Diagnosis Window for Children with Dyslexia】

"Dyslexia is a brain-based disorder—it is a characteristic of neurobiological mechanisms, not a lack of capability." — Prof. Urs Maurer, Department of Psychology, CUHK.

Within Hong Kong's current educational framework, children with dyslexia often have to wait until primary two or three to be formally diagnosed through reading tests. Before that official diagnosis, they endure nearly two years of frustration, anxiety, and academic struggle. For any family, this two-year wait is far too long and painful.

To change this reality, Prof. Urs Maurer—originally from Switzerland and now dedicated to research and teaching in Hong Kong for over eleven years—is leading a diverse research team at CUHK to pioneer early identification solutions. By utilizing advanced Electroencephalography (EEG) and Event-Related Potential (ERP) techniques, his lab applies computational "averaging" to extract clean, genuine neural responses to words from complex brain wave artifacts.

Prof. Maurer represents the finest tradition of CUHK faculty: combining world-class academic elite expertise (with roots in Zurich and New York) with profound humanistic care. His mission is clear and impactful—to shift the diagnostic window earlier, allowing timely clinical intervention to precede psychological frustration.

Bridging the gap between rigorous scientific data and warm clinical practice to safeguard the joy of reading for every child—this is the real-world impact of neuroscientific research.

(Prof. Winnie Mak)

(Prof. Suzanne So)

[Celebrating: Faculty Appreciation Achievement Award]

Earlier this month, we were honored to witness two of our esteemed faculty members being recognized at the Faculty Appreciation Achievement Award Celebration.

Outstanding Research Impact Award: Prof. Winnie Mak

In a deeply personal speech, Prof. Mak shared that her dedication to mental health is rooted in her lived experience with social anxiety and depression. From co-founding "StoryTaler" 說書人 StoryTaler in 2016 to leading the "Jockey Club Tour Heart+ Project 賽馬會心導遊計劃 Jockey Club TourHeart Project," she has worked tirelessly to dismantle stigma.

Research Mentorship Award: Prof. Suzanne So

Academic excellence is a journey of mentorship. Prof. So’s award recognizes her exceptional commitment to nurturing the next generation of researchers, ensuring that the rigors of psychological science are passed down with wisdom and care.

Congratulations to Prof. Mak and Prof. So for their well-deserved achievements and for bringing psychological insights from the lab to the heart of our community!

[In Pursuit of Excellence: A Heartfelt Farewell to the Class of 2026]

Last Friday, the campus was filled with a sense of pride and celebration. In the Pommerenke Student Centre Piazza, we witnessed the remarkable journey of our Psychology graduates coming to a beautiful milestone.

Beyond the formal portraits, it was the candid moments that truly captured the spirit of the day—the spontaneous laughter during the cannon blast, the warm embraces between lifelong friends, and the final, thoughtful conversations with our professors.

Graduation is not a conclusion, but a transition to new horizons. We wish all our graduates the very best as they step out to explore the complexities of the world with the same rigor and curiosity they cultivated here at CUHK.
