Registered Irish Charity (RCN: 20040697) Burren College of Art is an internationally recognised not-for-profit independent college specialising in undergraduate and graduate fine art education. We offer artists and art students from around the world time, space and inspiration within the unique environment of the Burren. The Master of Fine Art programme is accredited by the National University of Ireland, Galway and is operated in association with the Royal College of Art, London and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Our undergraduate Study Abroad programmes, Summer School and Artist Residency Scheme also recruit internationally.

Wednesday Session | Grace Wells & David Teevan | Wednesday 14 October @ 11am

✨ Please join us for this week’s Wednesday Session with eco-poet Grace Wells and creative producer David Teevan.

Grace and David will present Hometree’s eco-arts project Dinnseanchas, an ongoing artist-led process supporting nature and community resilience in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss and other eco-social pressures affecting rural Ireland.

The presentation will include Grace’s eco-poetry film and an introduction to the project, which is currently touring County Clare, including at glór, Ennis, from 15–18 October.

A visit from BCA alumna Kathryn Coneway 🌿

Kathryn recently returned to Burren College of Art, where she spent eight weeks studying in the summer of 1997.

Introduction to Plant Dyes 🌿

Today at BCA, alumna Katerina Gribkoff led an introduction to natural dyeing with plants.

Students learned about preparing fabrics and fibres for natural dyeing, as well as eco-printing and bundle dyeing methods, working with plant material gathered from BCA’s Living Materials Garden. Katerina also shared some of her knowledge around making plant inks and pigments.

Katerina has been caring for the garden over the summer, and today’s workshop offered a chance to work directly with some of the plants growing there.

Faculty Forum 2 | Dr. Áine Phillips & Dr. Ruby Wallis | Wednesday 30 September @ 11am

✨ Please join us for this week’s Wednesday Session with our very own faculty, Dr. Áine Phillips and Dr. Ruby Wallis.

Dr. Áine Phillips is an artist based in Galway whose practice spans live performance, installation, video and socially engaged practice. For over 35 years, her work has addressed women’s lived experience and autobiographical histories, feminism, community and social justice, particularly the histories of incarceration of women in Magdalen Laundries, Mother and Baby Homes and Industrial Schools in Ireland.

Dr. Ruby Wallis works across photography and visual art and has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Whistling in the Dark at Galway Arts Centre, This Rural at Lismore Castle Arts and Bones in the Attic at The Hugh Lane Gallery. In 2022, she published the photobook A Woman Walks Alone at Night, with a Camera, and her work has also appeared in The New Yorker, The British Journal of Photography and Winter Papers.

Wednesday Session | Original Copy & Marissa Stoffer | Wednesday 23 September @ 11am

✨ Please join us for tomorrow’s Wednesday Session with Original Copy (Riccardo Carbone and John Strutton) and Marissa Stoffer.

For the past 13 years, Original Copy have worked collaboratively across sound, text, performance, video and installation, developing ways of translating visual material into sound and musical notation. Their work explores ideas of place, time, ritual, chance and fragmentation.

Marissa Stoffer’s practice explores ecology, plants and our relationships with the natural world. Working with foraged botanicals and natural pigments, her work spans painting, textiles, installation, performance and sculpture.

Original Copy and Marissa have collaborated on a number of live performances, films and installations, and their work features in this year’s Burren Annual, Mushrooms, Megaliths and Maculate Monuments, opening Thursday evening at 6pm.

Bringing together sound, image, performance and installation, the exhibition explores ideas of place, time, ritual, chance and fragmentation.

We’re delighted to partner with Limerick City Gallery of Art to present John Cage’s Mushroom Book (1972), a key work from their permanent collection, alongside a new live performance and installation by Original Copy in response to the work.

Last night at Newtown Castle for Culture Night ✨

Brian Patrick Nally performed a collection of songs celebrating the flora, fauna, folklore and beauty of the Burren, and the connections between people and place.

We were delighted to host the event here at Burren College of Art as part of Culture Night.

Faculty Forum | Eileen Hutton & Conor McGrady | Wednesday 16th of September @ 11am

✨Please join us for the first Wednesday Session of the semester, featuring Burren College of Art faculty Eileen Hutton and Conor McGrady.

Eileen Hutton’s practice engages with ecology, biodiversity and climate change through research-led and collaborative approaches. Conor McGrady’s work examines systems of power, control and conflict, and has been exhibited internationally across museums, biennales and solo exhibitions.

A look back at All That Is Tangled Will Be Unravelled, Grace McCaffrey’s recent MA Graduate Exhibition at Burren College of Art.

Through watercolour, installation and moving image, the exhibition drew together strands of Grace’s research and practice developed throughout her MA in Studio Art.

Congratulations, Grace, on such a strong and deeply felt exhibition.
