Today, Dan Manning from the Department of Maritime Studies attended the Cyber Innovate Challenge at the Nimbus Research Centre on the MTU Bishopstown Campus.

This joint cybersecurity exercise demonstrates the vital importance of preparing for the complex and evolving threats facing Ireland’s maritime domain.

It also reflects the strength of the longstanding partnership between the Irish Naval Service the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), and Munster Technological University (MTU).

This partnership brings together operational expertise from the Naval Service and other elements of the Irish Defence Forces, academic knowledge, and advanced training capabilities.

By working collaboratively in realistic scenarios, participants are strengthening national resilience, developing critical skills, and ensuring that Ireland is better equipped to protect its maritime infrastructure and national interests.

Support the MTU/NMCI 150 Club Team Members Fundraising for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The 150 Club was established to celebrate 150 years of Cork City Fire Brigade while raising vital funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.
In 2014 Alex O'Shea, known as "The Running Fireman", completed his first Cork City Marathon in full fire kit, setting a Guinness World Record with an incredible time of 3:41:10 while fundraising for this amazing charity. For the 2027 Cork City Marathon, Alex is aiming for another Guinness World Record attempt and is inviting runners of all abilities to join the 150 Club. Representing Munster Technological University & NMCI are Paul Shanahan, Dónal Keane, and Sheldon Kirkwood.
All three are experienced marathon runners and proud members of the MTU BHAA Running Team.

Yesterday saw the return of NMCI’s Women On Water (WOW), with our largest gathering since the group was established in 2025.

First year female students from Nautical Science, Marine Engineering and Marine Electrotechnology joined female students from across the more senior year groups, including those undertaking the Second Engineer and Chief Engineer programmes, together with NMCI female academic staff.

WOW provides an important opportunity for our incoming first year students and returning students to connect with women across different programmes and stages of their maritime careers. By bringing the various year groups together for lunch, the initiative encourages new connections, shared experiences and peer support across the College.

The session generated plenty of lively discussion, with students hearing first hand insights from those who have already completed sea time and gaining a better understanding of what to expect when joining a vessel for the first time.

A special thank you to NMCI lecturers Sinead Reen and Kim Mulcahy, who facilitate the WOW group. As former female Nautical Science students themselves, Sinead and Kim understand first-hand the value of having a strong network of support while studying and beginning a maritime career.

Drawing on their own experiences, they help create that same support network for the next generation of female maritime students, providing a space where students can connect, share experiences, learn from one another and, importantly, support each other as they progress through their maritime careers.

NMCI was represented at the National Cyber Security Conference and Expo at the Convention Centre in Dublin this week, held as part of Ireland's Presidency of the EU.

The event brings together senior representatives from government, EU institutions, industry, academia and the wider European cyber security community to examine the most significant cyber security challenges and opportunities facing Europe. This is of critical importance to the maritime sector as it becomes increasingly digital and interconnected.

As part of the programme, Head of MARSEC at NMCI, Dr Robert McCabe, chaired a high-level panel of government, industry, and academic experts on subsea cable security and resilience in the context of cyber security risks. MARSEC Researcher, Daniel Cagney, also had a poster displayed on smart grid resilience. The conference themes reflect key areas of the MARSEC Project's ongoing research on maritime cyber resilience and the protection of critical maritime infrastructure.

“The cheapest shipyard quote can become the most expensive dry dock.”

The National Maritime College of Ireland welcomed Kevin Desmond for a practical session on dry dock planning, hosted by lecturer Brendan Courtney, with students from Chevron, Cunard. the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the Irish Naval Service Shell and BP attending.

Drawing on his experience as both a ship repair manager and a technical superintendent, Kevin brought valuable insight from both sides of the table.

The session explored:
• Turning a repair scope into a clear technical specification.
• Comparing shipyard quotations and identifying hidden costs.
• Planning spares, service engineers and logistics before arrival.
• Managing unexpected repairs, variation orders and the final bill.

A key takeaway: good dry dock planning starts long before the vessel enters the dock.

Thank you to Kevin for sharing his experience and to everyone who contributed questions and discussion. Sessions like this connect classroom learning with the decisions engineers face throughout their careers.

We are delighted to share some wonderful news from The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Ireland Annual Awards Dinner, held in Dublin last evening.
NMCI/MTU Supply Chain Management student Monika Krawczyk was named Undergraduate Student of the Year, a fantastic recognition of her hard work and outstanding achievements.
Minister Seán Canney, guest of honour at the event, was also on hand to congratulate Monika on receiving this prestigious award (Pictured below).

This week, our first year Nautical Science students swapped the classroom for the water for a team building day at the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven.
With support from the Royal Cork Yacht Club and with funding from Munster Technological University, the students had the opportunity to experience sailing aboard the club’s 1720s. For the second year running, we were fortunate to have spectacular conditions for a great day on Cork Harbour.
The sailing was followed by a debrief in the RCYC bar, along with some well earned pizza and refreshments.
As our first year students begin their journey at NMCI, activities like this provide a valuable opportunity to build confidence, strengthen teamwork and get to know their classmates outside the classroom.
We hope the day also gave a few of our newest students a taste for sailing!
Our sincere thanks to the Royal Cork Yacht Club and MTU for supporting the day in addition to our lecturers Michael Dybvik and Dónal Keane.

We are honoured to welcome the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 to the National Maritime College of Ireland this week, as delegates gather for the 4th ESFRI Stakeholder Forum Meetup and the 97th ESFRI Forum Meeting.
The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) supports the development and integration of research infrastructures across Europe, strengthening scientific collaboration and Europe’s international research capabilities.
We are delighted to host delegates at NMCI for their working sessions and to have the opportunity to showcase our facilities and capabilities during their visit to Cork.
