It was a pleasure to welcome Dr Luke O’Reilly, Dr Shauna Creane, Dr Paul Holloway and Dr Aaron Lim from University College Cork’s Department of Geography and the UCC Earth and Ocean Lab to the National Maritime College of Ireland yesterday.
The group toured NMCI and experienced several of our specialist facilities, including our new national Bridge, Engine Room and High-Voltage simulators, as well as the free-fall lifeboat simulator.
The visit was followed by excellent discussions on the UCC, Cork Education and Training Board, NMCI and Munster Technological University Offshore Hub, together with opportunities for joint courses, research collaboration and participation in future consortia.
Many thanks to NMCI Training Services, Operations Manager Ray Johnston for organising the tours and to Senior Instructor Jim Morrissey for putting our visitors’ sea legs to the test in the free-fall lifeboat simulator.
We look forward to building on the conversations and exploring the many opportunities for collaboration ahead.

Daniel Manning, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Maritime Studies, recently had the pleasure to represent Munster Technological University and NMCI at a lunch on board the UK RFA TIDEFORCE. This 39,000-tonne vessel serves as a fuel and supply hub for the Royal Navy and NATO warships. It keeps the fleet fuelled up and ready to go, anywhere in the world.

We are delighted that MTU’s Student Counselling Service is contributing to the Seafarers’ Well-Being Network (SWELL-NET), an international research and collaboration network dedicated to advancing knowledge, education and professional practice in maritime wellbeing.

SWELL-NET connects researchers and professionals from Ireland, Spain, Greece and Italy, focusing on areas including mental health, workplace wellbeing, inclusion, occupational safety and the human factors influencing life and work at sea.

As part of this collaboration, Dr Honor Carroll, Head of Student Counselling at MTU Cork, and Paul Mc Carthy, NMCI Student Counsellor, have produced a video showcasing NMCI’s SeaSafe initiative. Integrated into maritime education at NMCI, Seasafe takes a proactive approach to wellbeing. It equips cadets with practical skills to recognise and manage stress, respond safely to challenging situations, and report inappropriate behaviour through the correct channels. Informed by research, industry experience and student feedback, the programme helps prepare safer, healthier and more resilient maritime professionals.

📢 We are recruiting: Researcher 1 – FLOWLO Project
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the National Maritime College of Ireland for a 36-month research position leading NMCI’s contribution to FLOWLO – Floating Wind Logistics and Operations.
Funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and led by University College Cork in partnership with MTU/NMCI and Wind Energy Ireland, FLOWLO will examine the port infrastructure, vessel requirements, logistics and marine operations needed to support floating offshore wind development around Ireland’s south and west coasts.
The successful candidate will use NMCI’s advanced navigation-simulation facilities to lead applied research examining operations in Cork Harbour, Bantry Bay and the Shannon Estuary. They will also help develop new research partnerships and funding proposals for NMCI.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in maritime operations, navigation simulation, marine engineering, offshore renewable energy, ports or maritime logistics.

Yesterday, representatives from the National Maritime College of Ireland visited the CRIS - Centre for Robotics & Intelligent Systems at University of Limerick.

Brian Devitt, Head of College; James O’Byrne, Head of NMCI Training Services - "Global Leaders in Maritime Safety Training"; and Dr Robert McCabe, Head of MARSEC, had the opportunity to see the Centre’s impressive capabilities across aerial, maritime surface and underwater robotic systems.

The visit included hands-on demonstrations of drone technologies with advanced LiDAR and thermal-mapping capabilities, as well as the opportunity to pilot a remotely operated surface vessel.

Most importantly, the visit provided an excellent opportunity to discuss future research collaboration and potential joint funding initiatives in areas including maritime robotics, autonomous systems, environmental monitoring, maritime security and offshore operations.

A particular thank you to Professor Gerard Dooly, who organised the visit, and to the wider CRIS team for the warm welcome, excellent demonstrations and valuable discussions.

We look forward to building on today’s conversations and exploring opportunities to work together.
