MATEHY on Creedon's Atlas of Ireland 6.30pm RTÉ One Sunday August 25th
The fantastic legend of the moving graveyard of Matehy, recounting the murder of the priest at the Mass rock during penal times, is to feature on John Creedon’s new television series, ‘Creedon’s Atlas of Ireland’, this Sunday (August 25th) on RTÉ One @ 6.30pm. Filmed with a full RTÉ crew on a bright sunny day earlier this summer, local archaeologist and folklorist, Shane Lehane, walked John through the beautiful rolling hinterland from the Yellow House up to Fox’s Bridge and on to the old church site of Loughane where the priest-killer Captain Fox was reputedly buried, before finishing the story in the graveyard in Matehy. The inclusion of Matehy, Magh Teicheadh, ‘the Plain of the Fleeing’ as a placename on national television is indicative of how this local legend has remained important to the local community over many many years and will be of great interest to many. For this year’s end-of-year major project, Tim and I have been working hard with this year’s class group to develop a Mumming Play that fits in with the time of the equinox. It is a short (25mins) vernacular folk drama that takes as its theme the battle between Carnival and Lent. It is a wild, rather b***y and mischievous farce where St Finbarr kills Oliver Cromwell who is, in turn, miraculously brought back to life by a quack doctor. There is plenty of singing and dancing and general good humour.

We are presenting it in the Canteen in CSN this Wednesday coming @12.00 noon and again @1.30pm. It promises to be a rare performance and we would love to see you there.

Please pass the word,
Thanks
Shane
