The Manuscript of the Week is RIA MS 24 P 25, Leabhar Chlainne Suibhne / The Book of the Mac Sweeneys. This 16th century manuscript contains an account of the 6th century dispute between St Colum Cille and St Finnian over the ownership of a copy a Latin Psalter, which led to the battle of Cúl Dreimhne. RIA MS 12 R 33, known as the Cathach, has been associated with this story. On page 81 of Leabhar Chlainne Suibhne, you can read the famous ‘copyright’ judgement made by King Diarmait Mac Cerbhaill: to every cow its calf and to every book its copy.

The MS of the Week is on display in the Reading Room of the Library this week from 10.00-16.30, Monday-Friday, except for Wednesday, when the Library will be closed due to industrial action. No appointment or reader’s ticket is required to view the MS of the Week.

STARTING THIS THURSDAY
Four lecture series - St Patrick and Armagh: primacy, pre-eminence and pilgrimage given by Dr. Catherine Swift, Mary Immaculate College.
We commemorate Patrick every year as the missionary who founded the Irish church and we identify the Archbishop of Ireland as Patrick's successor and Primate of all Ireland. In this short course we examine the evidence for the development of both of these important traditions in Irish Christianity and discuss the implications for modern communities today.
Four lectures, all 7.30 – 8.30pm in the Loyola Institute Trinity College Dublin:
1) Thursday, 15th October: St Patrick: young slave and older churchman
2) Thursday, 22nd October: Fire on the hill of Slane: the development of a faith community
3) Thursday, 5th November: The Armagh library and the role of Scripture in Christian life
4) Thursday, 12th November: In times of darkness: Patrick, Armagh and the Vikings

Join the UCLA Medieval Texts Reading Group on Friday, October 23, from 2–4 PM to discuss 14th-century wills from Adar, Croatia.

Dr. Giulia Giamboni, John. Baldwin Postdoctoral Fellow at the CMRS Center for Early Global Studies, will lead the discussion and place the texts within their broader medieval cultural and literary context.

The reading group welcomes undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, and faculty interested in medieval literature across the Global Middle Ages. No expertise is required, and only a brief skim of the readings is needed beforehand.
