On World Book Day, a look at how often people read across the continent reveals striking differences.

The highest figures are found in Switzerland (81%), Luxembourg (75%), Denmark (72%), Estonia and Norway (71%). Strong results are also seen in Ireland (66%), Germany (65%), Czechia and Slovakia (64%), France (62%) and the Netherlands (60%).

At the other end of the scale, reading rates are much lower in parts of Southern and Eastern Europe. Only 26% reported reading a book in Serbia and Montenegro, compared to 30% in Romania and Turkey, 33% in Cyprus and 35% in Italy.

52.8% of EU residents reported reading at least one book in the last 12 months.
