Medical education must do more than teach facts; it must support students in becoming doctors.

In a new article for THE Campus, Professor Anne Hickey explores how medical curricula can better support students in developing their personal and professional identities alongside clinical knowledge.

Drawing on the RCSI curriculum, the piece highlights the importance of embedding professionalism, resilience and leadership into medical education, recognising that students need the skills to sustain themselves in demanding roles while delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.

New research from the RCSI School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences and the Medical Bureau of Road Safety reveals significant shifts in drug detection among suspected drug-impaired drivers in Ireland.

Led by Professor Gráinne Cousins, the analysis of more than 9,000 samples between 2012 and 2020 shows a sharp rise in co***ne and cannabis detection. Cannabis alone featured in half of all cases.

Young men were more likely to test positive for cannabis or cannabis combined with co***ne. Older drivers, including a higher proportion of women, were more often detected with multiple drugs or opioids.

The findings can be used to inform road safety interventions around drug driving.

The abstract work, which features nursing and midwifery leaders ascending a staircase, was commissioned by the Faculty to celebrate nursing and midwifery leadership in the 21st century. The piece is one of four sculptures commissioned in honour of inspiring nurses and midwives. The previous three feature Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth O’Farrell and Dame Peta Taaffe, the first Chief Nursing Officer for Ireland.

Take a look inside RCSI’s newest landmark on St Stephen’s Green.

The Irish Times sat down with Peter McGovern of Henry J Lyons to explore the thinking behind our new building at 118, and the result is a great snapshot of the space and its design.
