Best of luck to the first students embarking on a pioneering new applied drama and arts education masters course, Theatre SPACEs, who recently began their studies.

The course, the first-ever Erasmus Mundus in applied drama and arts education in Europe, is being run by three partner and two associate universities across Europe, including Trinity’s School of Education. The Joint Master's programme will focus on theatre in social, community and educational settings. To mark the occasion, representatives from these European universities gathered in Bergen, Norway, to welcome the first cohort of students to Theatre SPACEs.

Professor Carmel O’Sullivan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and an expert in arts and drama education, said: “Theatre has never been very good at staying inside its own walls, and neither will Theatre SPACEs! We’re bringing students, ideas and practices across countries, cultures and communities, exploring what can happen when theatre meets education, participation and social change.

“From Trinity’s perspective, it is tremendously exciting to see this ambitious European collaboration finally take the stage.”

The gathering marked the beginning of a two-year international learning journey for the inaugural cohort of 21 students, selected from 1,074 applicants across 110 countries. The students who are based in Bergen this term, will spend time at Trinity in 2027 and 2028.

Dr John Walsh, School of Education, was one of the expert contributors for Tumtha, a documentary on RTÉ2 telling the story of the Coláistí Ullmhúcháin (Preparatory Colleges), seven all-Irish second-level boarding schools established in the early years of the State to support the revival of the Irish language.

Dr Walsh spoke about the foundation of the Preparatory Colleges by the Irish Free State, their key role in the early state-led movement for revival of the Irish language and the closure of most of the Colleges in the early 1960s.

We are delighted to announce that CHARM-EU (Challenge-Driven, Accessible, Research-Based and Mobile European University) has secured €7.2 million in new funding from the European Commission.

This week, a report on children’s safety online was presented to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The report was informed by the work of a panel of experts tasked with developing a strong and practical European approach to keeping children safe online.

The report highlights the challenges children face online and provides recommendations to better protect and empower them, as well as to promote the age-appropriate use of social media and other digital services.

The panel brought together young people and experts from across the EU, including in health, neuroscience, education, psychology, computer science, child rights, and digital literacy. We're proud to see Trinity College Dublin's School of Education represented in this work through Dr Louise Heeran Flynn, one of the experts who contributed to the panel. 👏

The report also includes practical guidance for children and young people, parents and teachers.
