Shame and pub culture blamed as survey finds Irish men are struggling to talk about obesity.

UCD School of Medicine's Prof Carel Le Roux says: “Obesity is now considered a complex chronic disease, yet it is still often viewed through the lens of willpower or personal responsibility. When the disease of obesity is linked with shame or personal failure, conversations can become much harder to have.”

Could a small patch of donor skin provide an early, visible signal that a transplanted organ may be at risk of rejection?

Professor Róisín Dolan, Adjunct Clinical Professor at UCD School of Medicine, Conway Fellow at UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research, and Chief Investigator of Sentinel Study Ireland and Academic Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, joined Jonathan McCrea on Newstalk’s Futureproof to discuss this pioneering Irish research programme.

A transplanted organ is hidden inside the body and early rejection may cause only vague symptoms. Sentinel is investigating whether a small, blood-supplied patch of skin from the same donor, transplanted onto the recipient’s arm, could provide a visible window into the immune response.

A UCD School of Medicine graduate and former UCD Ad Astra Academy Elite Sports Scholar, Mark has become the first Irish man to win gold at the European Athletics Championships.

A famous night for the Donegal runner as he comes out on top in the men's 800m in Birmingham.

🎉👏Congratulations to UCD Medicine alumnus Mark English who broke a 48-year-old European Championship record to make it into the 800m final.

His semi-final championship record of 1:43.49 beat the previous championship record held by Olay Beyer from East Germany, whose time of 1:43.84 was set in 1978.

The European Athletics Championships are taking place in Birmingham, UK (10 - 16 August 2026).

👏Congratulations to UCD Medicine alumnus (Class of 1987) and former UCD Dean of Medicine (2006 – 2013), Professor William G. Powderly, who, on 1 August 2026 will be named the Larry J. Shapiro Distinguished Professor in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences.

Dr. Powderly is currently the Dr. J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine and Director of the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), and Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Science at Washington University School of Medicine (WashU Medicine).

Dr. Powderly is recognised as an outstanding mentor and leader for faculty development and training programs and has served on the editorial boards of multiple major infectious diseases journals. He has played a major role in leading the Division of Infectious Diseases and expanding clinical trials and clinical and translational research at WashU Medicine.
