💙💛 University College Dublin has conferred an honorary Doctorate of Science on Dr John Roche, one of the world’s leading authorities on pasture-based dairy systems, in recognition of his outstanding scientific leadership and contribution to the global agrifood sector.

A native of Castleisland, County Kerry, he graduated from UCD with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science before completing a Master’s degree in Farm Systems and Grazing Management at the University, and a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry in Australia.

Dr Roche currently serves as New Zealand’s Prime Minister’s Chief Science Adviser and Chief Science Advisor to the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Delivering his citation, Professor Tommy Boland praised John as a strong reflection of the values of the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science.

“[He] is a fantastic representative of what the school stands for: the importance of science, a sound evidence base for policy development, the intrinsic value of the degree of Agricultural Science and the capacity of our graduates to deliver real change and value at a global scale.”

UCD awarded the honorary degree on Dr Roche during the centenary year of the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, recognising him as an outstanding example of the global impact of its graduates and the contribution agricultural science can make to society.

The honorary degree was conferred by UCD President Professor Orla Feely during a special ceremony at UCD’s O’Reilly Hall.

Congratulations to UCD’s Annie O’Neill who took part in this weekends prestigious Pat Smullen Charity Race at The Curragh.

Annie O’Neill, from Kildare rode the horse Idomything trained by Thomas Cleary and was raising money and riding for family currently battling cancer. Many congratulations to Annie on taking part in a wonderful race and event.

The Pat Smullen Race Day has gone from strength to strength since it began as just a charity cycle in 2019, and the inspirational Frances Crowley explained just how big a difference it is making.

Crowley said: “Everyone who has supported the Pat Smullen Fund, Cancer Trials Ireland and the Pat Smullen Race Day at the Curragh over the past seven years has helped put Ireland on the map in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Because of that, people in Ireland will get faster access to a new breakthrough treatment.”

The winner on the day was a very familiar face at the Curragh, the wonderful Nina Carberry who said she was honoured to take part and “There was great camaraderie between us all and it was so enjoyable.”

Many congratulations to Meabh Byrne who has won the the Irish Guild of Agricultural Journalists award for best presentation of a business idea in the Communications and Agri-Innovation module.

Méabh is currently completing her MSc in Animal Science in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science and developed her idea centered on a ‘One Lab’ concept to streamline diagnostic services to improve animal health.

An advocate for women in agriculture, earlier this year Méabh was named as one of the five Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Women in Agriculture Ambassador finalists. We are also thrilled to welcome Méabh to this years Ploughing Championships for a special panel to celebrate the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

Many congratulations to our first MSc Food, Science with Nutrition class who last Friday presented their final presentations.

The 19 students of our new MSc programme will submit their theses at the end of this week but it was great to bring together MSc students, colleagues, PhD students and postdocs come together for this final event.

UCD Ag Science was well represented once again at this years Rose Of Tralee with animal and crop production graduate, Monaghan man David McKearney es**rt for the Kildare Rose.

Also flying the flag, is Cavan man Enda Shalvey who will es**rt the New Zealand Rose.

Suckler and sheep farming alongside his parents, Brendan and Elizabeth, David McKearney has a day job in pesticide regulation with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in Backweston, Co. Kildare.

Enda is a commercial manager for ABP Food Group and is heavily involved in Macra
