What a ride it’s been 🎡🌊

One of our final Galway walks brought us to Salthill: We swam, wandered along the promenade and planned to return for the iconic jump from Blackrock Diving Tower when the tide was high enough. Kate Sanders

We never quite made it back, such is life, and perhaps a reminder for next year’s MSc students: don’t leave your Blackrock jump until the end!

Later, after we had just been talking about them, we unexpectedly ran into some more classmates gemma . One of those strange, perfectly timed little moments that made the day feel especially meaningful.

A sweet end-of-year connection between past and present students, with the Ferris wheel behind us and Galway doing what Galway does best… bringing people together when you least expect it. 💙

And just like that, the MSc Coastal & Marine Environments class of 2025–2026 has reached the end of an unforgettable year. 🌊🎓

From lectures and fieldwork to windswept coastlines, late nights, countless cups of coffee and finally submitting our dissertations,we’ve learned so much, not only about coastal and marine environments, but from one another.

We arrived from different places and backgrounds, brought together by a shared love of the coast. We leave with new knowledge, lasting friendships and memories that will stay with us long after Galway. Anna Baraldini💋 gemma Izzabellabetty

Rain or shine, every path across campus has become part of this journey

In just a few weeks, I’ll submit the dissertation that has taken me across Ireland, introduced me to remarkable people, and reshaped how I think about sustainability, the circular economy, and research.

Not quite the finish line yet but definitely a moment worth pausing for.

Best of luck to everyone in my MSc cohort as you put the finishing touches on your dissertations. It’s been a privilege to share this journey with you. 🍀

Wandering Wednesday 🌊🇮🇪

Still thinking about the field days that shaped this MSc experience — from Grattan Beach in Salthill to the cliffs of Donegal, learning directly from Ireland’s coastal environments alongside such an incredible group of people.

Some of the best parts of the MSc in Marine & Coastal Environments at University of Galway happened outside the classroom: rainy shoreline surveys, climbing across rock platforms, coastal geomorphology discussions in the Atlantic wind, and long bus rides with classmates who became friends along the way.

Missing the field trips, the chaos of waterproof gear, and the people already.

Really grateful to have had these moments later featured in the University of Galway MSc film such a special way to look back on this chapter 🌦️

Policy doesn’t stop at being written; it has to work in the real world. 🌍📚

Next week, the Institute for Lifecourse and Society’s Public Policy seminar series will explore one of the biggest questions in governance today: how do we actually implement effective policy in complex and rapidly changing times?

This seminar will bring together academics, public servants, and civil society voices to discuss:
