As part of Business Orientation on 3 September, students will hear directly from Deloitte Ireland, with Kevin McDonnell joining us to share their experiences of working in professional services.

Across three BComm Orientation sessions, Dylan and Kevin will give students an insight into the industry, the different career paths available and what it’s really like to build a career with a leading professional services firm.

✈️ From Galway to Hong Kong

What happens when you swap Galway for Hong Kong for a semester?

For one J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics student, it meant studying at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, making friends from around the world, exploring Asia and becoming part of the Irish sporting community in Hong Kong.

Through our international exchange opportunities, students can experience university life in a completely different setting while continuing their studies. During his semester abroad, he had the opportunity to take classes that weren’t available at home, explore Hong Kong and travel across Asia, including mainland China, Thailand and Japan.

Away from the classroom, sport became a big part of the experience. From representing Hong Kong at the Asian Gaelic Games in Bangkok with Hong Kong GAA to playing rugby with Hong Kong Football Club, the exchange provided plenty of opportunities to get involved, meet people and build a home away from home.

It’s exactly what international exchange is about: broadening your experience, challenging yourself and seeing where your time at university can take you.

What does it really take for organisations to scale?

New research from Prof Esther Tippmann of University of Galway - J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, explores how organisations move from being scalable in theory to successfully scaling in practice.

Published in the Academy of Management Annals, the paper Scalability and Scaling in Management Research: Toward a Process Model Integrating Fragmented Literatures brings together previously fragmented research to develop a process model for understanding scalability and scaling in management.

The research, co-authored with Prof Justin Jansen of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University and Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, highlights the different factors that influence how organisations scale, while also considering the potential challenges and consequences that can come with growth.

The paper is published in a 4 ABS-ranked journal and FT50-listed publication*, marking an important contribution to management research on organisational growth and scaling.

Congratulations to Prof Esther Tippmann and all involved in this important research.

The research was funded by Atlantic Futures through a Strand III project funded under the North South Research Programme (NSRP), supported by the Government of Ireland’s Shared Island Fund.

🎓🇳🇿🏉From Health Economics in Galway to new opportunities on the other side of the world.

As she completes her MSc in Health Economics at University of Galway, Morgan reflects on a year that took her from health economics, health technology assessment and applied research to experiences that extended far beyond the classroom.

Her dissertation explored public attitudes towards the provision and financing of expanded home care services in Ireland, while the Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM Mentorship Programme gave her valuable insight into the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector.

But some of Jasmine’s most memorable experiences came through University of Galway Women’s Rugby. As Vice-Captain, a member of the Rugby Committee, a University Rugby Scholar and Players’ Player, the connections she made through sport ultimately helped inspire her move to New Zealand. 🇳🇿🏉

Today, Jasmine continues to play rugby with Hauraki North RFC, has been selected for the Regional Thames Valley Vixens, and is working as a Behavioural Teaching Assistant at Waitākuru Primary School.

Her story is a great reminder that your university experience can take you places you never expected, and that the people, opportunities and experiences you embrace along the way can shape what comes next.

We’re proud to have been part of Jasmine’s journey and wish her every success for her next chapter.
