📺 Two new Science on Screen documentaries are coming to RTÉ One!
Join us at 8:30pm on two Monday nights:

Monday 12 October: Counter Attack. Meet vascular surgeon Dr Niamh Hynes, whose research focuses on the aorta, and musician Frankie Lane, who survived a heart attack after a life-changing encounter with paramedic Pat McCarthy.

Monday 19 October: Imperfect Days. An honest look at the human impact of diabetes research and clinical trials, funded by the HRB Diabetes Collaborative Clinical Trial Network.

Both films were made through Science on Screen, a partnership between Rinn Medical Devices, and Ardán. Patients, filmmakers and researchers create the stories together that reflect real lives, not just lab results.

Researchers at University of Galway have found that venomous snakes are significantly more likely than non-venomous species to have colours that stand out against their natural surroundings.

While warning colouration has been studied in individual species and small groups of animals, it has remained unclear whether conspicuous colouration is generally associated with venom across a large number of snake species.

The researchers compared more than 450 snake species in their natural habitats by sourcing thousands of photographs from around the world through the citizen science platform iNaturalist.

They examined whether venomous species were more visually distinct from their surroundings than non-venomous species. The study confirmed that while many venomous snakes are not brightly coloured, a large number have evolved distinctive colours and patterns.
