Heritage Society GMIT

Heritage Society GMIT Heritage Society GMIT is based in Galway City, Ireland. The society's members are students of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.

It is the official society for students of the Heritage Studies course in GMIT. The goal of the society is to promote knowledge and awareness of Irish, European, and World Heritage to the students of GMIT, as well as the wider population. We aim to achieve this through symposiums, field trips, and other events. History, Geography, Archaeology, Environment, Folklore, Literature, Art, Tourism, Genea

logy, Museum Studies, Traditional Irish Music, Entrepreneurship, Urban & Rural Field Studies, Languages, Independent Research, Computing, these are all elements of the Heritage Studies course in GMIT, elements which are promoted within the Heritage Society. Traditionally, heritage was concerned with the preservation of ancient monuments and buildings of architectural merit. Nowadays, it also involves the use of the past in the present - in commemorations, museum exhibitions, tourist attractions etc. Heritage includes almost anything that one generation hands down to the next, or anything from the past that people identify with. Heritage Studies in GMIT the areas of study include:

Students learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, active learning, class discussions, film viewings, practical learning in computer and language labs, and online learning. There is a strong emphasis on off-site teaching, with field trips to heritage sites, museums and interpretative centres.

We are also publishing the AYIA 2018 Conference Proceedings alongside the Scottish Student Archaeology Society 2018 Conference Proceedings. Don't pass up the opportunity to disseminate your student research on an international scale!

Gmit Heritage Society is proud to present : Heritage Day!!!!
This will be held in the Union Square from 12-2 on Wednesday the 21 March.

We will have tea and biscuits, a few heritage related stands and a sign up table. Come out and say hello and chat to the fierce friendly people at the tables.
There will be a special guest appearance form Breda Finn.

Hi everyone,

The Heritage Society AGM will be held on Tuesday 24/10/17 at 4:30 in room 1041 (video conference room). As there was no AGM last year and in order to register the society with the students union this year, a temporary committee was formed to complete this.
The current temporary members of the committee are as follows:
Chairperson: Shane Grady
Secretary: Leanne Dillon
Treasurer: Sean Delaney
Public Relations Officer: Brendan McHugh

The members of this committee will be putting themselves forward for election, and a vote will be taken on the day for
each of the positions, by show of hands or secret ballot. If you would like to run for any of the positions it is open to all members of the society.
An agenda will released on the our page before Tuesday as well as the new constitution.

The Heritage Society is delighted to confirm a guest lecture from the legendary folklorist and story-teller Eddie Lenihan in GMIT this coming Tuesday, April 4th. The main theme of Eddie's lecture will be Irish Fairies among other folklore topics.
The lecture is open to everyone and all students and staff of GMIT are welcome to attend.

Good morning everyone. We have two announcements to make today. Firstly we will be holding a re election meeting for our PRO role today between 2 and 3. Come along if you are interested in the role or just want to see what's going on.
Secondly, there is a talk in NUIG tomorrow, March 9th at 8 o'clock in the Bank of Ireland theatre. Dr Mags Mannion will be giving the talk as part of the Muscailt festival and the subject of the talk will be medieval glass beads. Hope you all can make it :)
