We had the most wonderful weekend at the 51st Sir Peter Freyer Surgical Symposium at the University of Galway, a gathering of leading Surgeons, Educators, Innovators, Healthcare Leaders and Industry Partners.

We were honoured to welcome Professor Shafi Ahmed, a world-renowned Surgeon, Educator and Healthcare Innovator. His pioneering work in digital health, virtual reality and medical education continues to shape the future of surgical training and new approaches to lifelong surgical learning.

Professor Ahmed launched Surgeon AI, the first global AI surgical training platform, which was unveiled at the University of Galway. Designed to support Surgeons throughout their professional journey, from medical school and examinations through surgical training and independent consultant practice, Surgeon AI has the potential to transform how Surgeons are trained, assessed and supported throughout their careers.

We were delighted to welcome Professor Helen Heneghan, Consultant Bariatric and General Surgeon at St Vincent’s University Hospital and Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin, who delivered the State of the Art Lecture. Professor Heneghan’s lecture offered invaluable insights for Surgeons and Surgical Trainees aiming to translate the latest advances in bariatric surgery into consistent, effective and personalised clinical care.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to such an exceptional Freyer Surgical Symposium, bringing together research, education, collaboration and innovation, highlighting the exciting advances shaping the future of surgery.

Professor Helen Heneghan, Consultant Bariatric and General Surgeon at St. Vincent's University Hospital & Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin will deliver the State of the Art Lecture - THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF OBESITY TREATMENT: PERSONALISED APPROACHES TO OPTIMISE SURGERY AND OUTCOMES at the Sir Peter Freyer Surgical Symposium.

A graduate of the University of Galway, Helen completed her basic surgical training in Galway University Hospital in 2008 and was awarded a PhD in molecular expression of breast cancer and obesity from the University of Galway in 2012. She completed the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Higher Surgical Training scheme in General Surgery and during her training, she spent two years in the Bariatric Metabolic Institute in Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. Helen completed her training with a Bariatric Fellowship in the UK.

She has co-authored 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has written 5 book chapters on the topics of bariatric and endocrine surgery. She is the surgical lead for the National Clinical Programme for Obesity. She is co-founder and President of the newly established Society for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Ireland (SOMSI) and Council Member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Specialists Society.

This lecture is a must-attend for Surgeons and Surgical Trainees aiming to translate the latest advances in bariatric surgery into consistent, effective and personalised clinical care.

RCSI will host a nationwide telesurgery workshop at this year’s Sir Peter Freyer Surgical Symposium on Friday, 4 September 2026, giving surgeons and surgical trainees in Galway the opportunity to remotely operate the Sentire Surgical System located at RCSI in Dublin.

Supported by the University of Galway and Cornerstone Robotics, the workshop will demonstrate the potential of telesurgery to expand access to robotic surgery education and training across Ireland.
