Don’t miss the opportunity to apply for the Dr Karen Guinee Scholarship! 🧬

This scholarship is for students studying undergraduate Medicine at University of Galway who may be facing financial or other obstacles that hinder their access to third-level education.

The scholarship is open to first-year students registered on GY501 Medicine, studying either the 5-year or 6-year degree, and is worth €6,250 per year for the duration of their undergraduate degree.

The Student Accommodation Assistance Fund is currently open for applications!🏠

The fund provides financial support to assist eligible students with accommodation costs while attending third-level education. Supports of up to €6,000 are available for the 2026/27 academic year.

Eligible applicants include students from Traveller and Roma backgrounds and students with experience of the care system who are living independently while attending university.

Applications close at 5pm on 16 October.

It’s great to see colleagues across University of Galway showcasing their work in Universal Design and inclusive practice, including this work from the Centre for Adult Learning & Professional Development.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the 8th International Universal Design Conference to Galway next month!

The conference will bring together research, practice and lived experience from across disciplines, with a shared focus on creating more accessible and inclusive environments for everyone.

Since 2012, the International Conference on Universal Design has served as a recognised platform for sharing research, innovative practice, and lived experience across disciplines. Galway is hosting the 8th International Universal Design Conference next month - https://ud26.ie/

Our talented Adult Learning colleagues David Stafford and Dr Bonnie Long have created a poster for the event showcasing the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) template developed by the Centre to support courses. Drawing on Quality Matters and Universal Design for Learning principles, the template promotes a consistent and accessible approach to online course design.

Reminder: 1916 Bursary Applications Close Soon!⏰

The 1916 Bursary supports first-time entrants to higher education from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. Priority groups include students with disabilities, carers, lone parents, members of the Traveller and Roma communities, mature students, and ethnic minorities.

To be eligible, applicants must:
✔️ Meet the SUSI special rate income threshold
✔️ Belong to a priority group
✔️ Be a new entrant to an approved full-time or part-time undergraduate course and have lived in Ireland for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

The Galway City Intercultural and Anti-Racism Strategy was launched today! 🤝

Coordinated by Galway City Partnership alongside local statutory, education and community stakeholders, the Strategy brings organisations across Galway City together to promote social inclusion, celebrate diversity and combat racism and discrimination.

The Access Centre at University of Galway is proud to be contributing to its delivery, including by supporting educational and training organisations to promote diversity and create inclusive, welcoming environments through initiatives such as Schools of Sanctuary and University of Sanctuary.

We look forward to continuing to work with partners and communities across Galway City to help turn the Strategy into action.
