If so, the DCU SafeZone app is available!

This app allows Dublin City University to provide emergency support to staff and students anywhere in the world through a free mobile safety application called SafeZone, which links users with University Security.

SafeZone is available to our student and staff population across the Glasnevin, St Patrick’s and All Hallows campuses.

The app is also of use to University staff and students who are working and studying overseas.

The ever-popular DCU Book Club returns this semester with an exciting lineup of in-conversation events featuring Booker-listed 'All Them Dogs' by Djamel White, Sarah Waters’ 'The Night Watch', 'Eden's Shore' by Oisín Fagan, and 'Said the Dead' by Doireann Ní Ghríofa.

Free and open to all but booking required. Just grab your copy in print, digital, library loan, or audiobook format. Developed by the DCU Cultural Arts Office in partnership with DCU Library, it’s been called 'probably the best book club in the country'. Spaces fill quickly, so be sure to secure your place soon!

Why does the pollen season in Ireland now go on for so long?

Rising temperatures and wider climatic changes are altering pollen seasons and human exposure to airborne allergens, writes Dr David O'Connor, Associate Professor in DCU's School of Chemical Sciences, for RTÉ Brainstorm.

For many hay fever sufferers, June is the month to endure. Once the main grass pollen season begins to fade, it can be tempting to think that the worst is over for another year. Unfortunately, the pollen season has one final sting in its tail. One of the pollens we increasingly encounter towards the latter part of summer comes from a plant almost everyone in Ireland will recognise: the common stinging nettle.

We associate nettles with the painful sting they deliver when we brush against them, but they can affect us in another way. They produce large quantities of tiny pollen grains which are released into the atmosphere and carried by the wind.

Should we embrace AI or fear it?

Speaking on 'The Claire Byrne Show' on Newstalk, Prof Alan Smeaton DCU Computing addressed the surging use of unregulated AI chatbots among young people, explaining that social media giants possess the capability to fix age verification but choose not to because young users drive profit. Prof Smeaton noted that current financial penalties act merely as an operational cost to these corporations, meaning government legislation will remain ineffective until fines are significantly raised to force real structural compliance.

When responding to claims that AI will surpass humans in almost every domain by next year, Prof Smeaton dismissed the hype as cynical marketing ahead of tech IPOs (Initial Public Offering), urging the public to take such predictions with a grain of salt. While thrilling from a computer science perspective, current models still fall far short of human emotion, empathy, and experience, remaining vulnerable to a potential cooling off in market valuation.

Ever thought about turning your passion into a business, but felt unsure where to start?

When launching a venture, Terry O'Brien - Thriving Career, Career Consultant and Lecturer at DCU Business School, advises testing the market before quitting your job: 'You need to test whether there is demand for the product or service you’re offering and whether people are willing to pay for it'. He stresses remaining flexible to customer demands and preparing via local enterprise courses, cautioning: 'Don’t give up the day job until you’ve tested the waters'.

He also warns that running a business means taking on multiple roles: 'You’re the receptionist, CEO, salesperson, and marketing person all at once'. To avoid working longer hours and burning out, Terry recommends getting expert help where needed, noting: 'The likes of a marketing professional can set you straight on everything from how much to charge for your product to how to present it to the public'.

DCU announces EMERGENCE Dance Residency artists

An initiative driven by DCU Institute for Climate and Society Dancer in Residence Mia DiChiaro, EMERGENCE will support two Irish dance artists to undertake new creative research exploring climate, ecology, land, textiles and sustainability.

Subhashini Goda and Tara Brandel have been selected as the recipients of the EMERGENCE Dance Artist Residencies, an initiative led by Mia in partnership with DCU’s Institute for Climate and Society. The paid residencies provide Irish-based dance artists with dedicated time and space to develop their practice, undertake artistic research and explore new work without the pressure of producing a public outcome.

The programme forms part of a 18-month engagement and dancer support residency led by Mia, bringing communities across DCU and the communities within DCU together to explore themes around climate through the practice of dance.

The EMERGENCE residencies provide artists with access to studio space at DCU, a participation fee, and additional access support, alongside opportunities to connect with researchers at DCU’s Institute for Climate and Society. The initiative was designed to support artists from across Ireland, with additional slow-travel and accommodation support available to selected artists based outside Dublin.

DCU is thrilled to announce the appointment of acclaimed dancer and choreographer Monica Munoz Dance as the new The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon Children and Young People’s Arts (CYPA) Dancer-in-Residence.

During her residency, Muñoz will be based in the School of Arts Education and Movement within DCU's Institute of Education. Bringing a wealth of international experience in dance and education, she will focus on creative engagement, performance, and practice-based research tailored for young audiences.

Muñoz has extensive experience creating work specifically for children and young people. Her practice sits at the intersection of dance performance, education, and early childhood engagement, making her a natural fit for DCU’s Institute of Education - Ireland’s leading centre for teacher training and educational research.
